The stock bulbs 1156 or 1157's can be replaced with 2356 and 2357's. << Higher wattage.
I did that and polished the lenses with McGuire's Plast X.
Not a huge difference but noticeable.
The off the shelf LEDs will be a disappointment. The way the housing is set up, they won't throw the light out correctly and may even be dimmer then the stock bulbs.
