I hear you, I bought a 68 pad a couple of years ago for a spare from a local swap meet. It was redone by a local shop and looked excellent except for the ends where there were extra seams that showed. I'm pretty sure depending on the prices in your area you could save a bundle compared to just dashes if you just want a good look. In my experience you should check with at least two with the dash in your hand and make sure they know your expectations and can assure you they will meet them or redo it to get it right. And of course put it in writing. Then go with whoever gives you the fuzziest feeling.
