On first gen birds the hood scoops are in a place where they will never see positive air pressure. The air hits the nose of the car and goes over the roof. There isn't any benefit to the so called ram air, its in a dead spot. The second generation formula hood scoops are in the correct place. Your best to have as much hood clearance as you can and use a minimum of a 3 inch air filter.
