You might also consider the 200-4R if you're going to stay with an automatic. They will bolt right up to the pontiac engine without any adapters the 700R4 requires. They can be built to handle the horsepower and torque and the overdrive will allow you to drive on the freeway without turning 3500 rpms. It's what I'm looking at for my 69 with a modified 400.
