I had the same problem. I added 3 air cleaner gaskets to lift the base just enough to miss the choke. I then put a 2" filter on to miss the hood insulation. My car is a stock 350 edelbrock set up.

I put an open element on a car with insulation once. It started sucking the insulation off! Solution: remove insulation.
