In my reading, I've run across comments about "rat rods". What are they talking about, aside from any anatomical aspects of small furry animals?

The very low budget, usually unfinished, homemade hot rods built out of 20s and 30s chassis. Not the nice, refined street rods with rack and pinion and four wheel discs...we're talking rough and often ugly, but with a charm of their own.

A better know term us older folk know is Jalopy [Slang] an old ramshackle automobile.

Rat rods these days are build to look like an ol' junker. Most all have todays better safety measures built in.

A car someone was too lazy to paint.

Primered, pinstriped, mexican blanket upholstery, no chrome, no billet, not much by way of creature comforts...you get the idea.
Kinda of a subculture these days.

They had a display of Rat Rods in the Cobo Hall basement during the Autorama. I found some of those cars and trucks to be more interesting and appealing than many of the glitz and glitter creations upstairs.

Others were just plain junk hauled in from the back 40.

Rat rods, are what 'hot rods' used to be originally.

raw, not as a rule fancy looking (but sometimes they were.) -stripped down, no bullsiht.

-Rusty, primered, maybe painted.

-not boyd coddington-cars.

I'm not a big fan of the "Coddington Touch".

This will give ya an idea....

I always thought it meant a car that you stuffed a big block chevy motor into. BBC's are rat motors, SBC's are mouse motors.

Just like when I rode. There were the built/bought bikes and rat rides.....choppers man!!!!
