Did the 68 firebirds use the same Muncie 4 speed tranny and Muncie 4 speed shifter/Linkage as the 68 Camaro's,??.. Did they use the exact same shifter and shifter linkage,??>. Can I buy a repop Muncie shifter and any 1st gen. or new muncie style tranny and will it work okay, regardless if it's a chevy Camaro, or Pontiac Firebird.. I bought a Muncie repop shifter from classic industries, and I was wondering if it will work okay and if I will need anything else... whadda ya think/know,???
Has anybody here actually installed one of the ones from classic Ind. ??.. And how did it fit.. The linkage is bent different on the one from classic Ind. than the 1968 original Camaro one I compared it to, What could be wrong here,??.
Hey Bob, Thanks,, I did'nt know that... good info to know.. That will help me out alot.. I am going to need some help in trying to do this car right.. I will post another thread for advice.. Thanks for the info...
I believe if you go to the hurst site they have the original exploded diagrams for the bird shifter...I recall downloading a pdf of it once a while back.
Be careful with Classic Industries. They have a reputation for selling you Camaro parts for your Firebird when you really need Firebird parts. Sometimes Camaro parts are the same, sometimes not. I usually get stuff from Ames Performance. They only sell stuff for Pontiacs and usually know what they're doing.
Well guys,, I crawed under the 68 Bird today, and guess what,, it is a Muncie 4 speed.. The side cover has 7 bolts.. It is an aluminum case.. The shifter that is installed in there now I think might be a Hurst Shifter.. There is a ' U ' clamp at the end of the tail shaft where the shifter bolts on.. and it has a Hurst 'T' shifter handle.. I still have some more investigating to do, but it will have to wait for awhile...
I removed a Hurst 69 Z shifter from the 68 and the idiot cut the trans tunnel to get it to fit..the 1-2 was too far to the left. The shifter will work with that handle I believe...just need the correct mounting bracket.

I owned a real and all original 69Z and the shifter would have fit perfectly in a Bird. It has the same offset for the Camaro console as a Firebird console...exactly. I guess you could be getting confused about a Z shifter that wasn't made to fit a console??? Here's what the originals for console look like;
It is the bracket. I OWN a correct OEM 69 Z shifter (read further)
Tell you what. Come over, reinstall the Z shifter AND that bracket.
Do you like to argue for argument sake? WTF!
I know you have those pictures filed away somewhere of my 400 HO. Take a look at the shifter and the trans tunnel.
Yea..what I THOUGHT too. I actually talked to Pete Serio (Precision Pontiac) who rebuilds Hurst and rechromes the handles. Sent him 15 pics of the original from the 68 and of the repop Z and original Z shifter.
Thanks again for telling me, us and them what I already said. And like Pete and I said was regarding the fit and shifter bracket for Camaro (as I already mentioned)
If you would like Jim..the car is still here, untouched. The shifters are ALL here. The brackets are all here as well, the linkage. Guess it is like Brent said...It is all about you, your perception and nothing else.
I am not in the least bit upset..I know that is what gets your goat..for someone to make ferocious comments like you percieve they care.
I don't.

And you will see that with the U shaped bracket, an OEM 69 Z shifter, the shifter hits the tunnel. If you are in doubt..as I said, the car is here. Call the car and shifter out.
I had to post another reply because I know if I edit the one above you will copy and paste it before I have a chance to add anything.

I only argue for the sake of good information given on a question. The Z shifter, if correct, fits the 1st gen Firebird perfectly. I know this as fact. You can see that in the picture above.
I already said that (it would fit) Jim. You even quoted me.
Hello?
And what can you see in the picture above? My comment was about the shifter indeed fitting and working fine. The question was the bracket which was addressed.
Oh, thats right, you need to agree or disagree for it to truly fit?

This is what I was addressing. It's false. The shifter will not be 1-2 inches to the left. The offset is right and it will be in the right place in the tunnel. The Z does have the correct mounting bracket.

I DID NOT say, nor have I EVER said 1"-2" to the left (as you infer above). What I said is the 1-2 (shift) was to far to the left. You talk about people not reading correctly (as you have asserted in PM's to me) You constantly scathe others for not reading what you have written, in the context or application referenced.
Again, the SAME 69 Z-28 shifter was fine with the correct mounting bracket.
That is what I have said from the start..You add in what? reassertions of what I already confirm..Thanks.

Here's your whole post Tom. It says that the Camaro bracket doesn't work. That's wrong. The Camaro bracket does work. Nothing personal, just getting it right, and, you're welcome.
I do not post to argue. So I need not address your questions. All I need to do is tell the asker and readers that the Camaro parts interchange. That is positive.
