Have 6 mbps speed. Downloads are wicked fast. Problem is page speed, video hesitation from websites (sound good) Used malware, grayware/spyware cleaner, still slow as hell loading pages and playing videos smoothly. It used to be bam, bam, bam, bam..with pages..Now it is bam..........bam........bam.......bam. No excuse for my OS with the fastest speed available in my area.
Any ideas? System is a 1.6 AMD with 160 gig, 50% free space. plenty of memory.

I'm by no means an expert, but based on my own experience it sounds like you're having some serious packet loss between your computer and your ISP. Could be a faulty or overloaded router. Do you know how to perform a traceroute? What operating system are you using?
Try goin to www.pcpitstop.com Its a good diagnostic site for testing your PC components and also will let ya trace your route, test speed, etc. After you test it, be sure to click "Test Details" to show a more detailed analysis of the results.

Being a Mac/Unix guy, my windows is a bit rusty. But I think that you do it like this.
- open a dosbox (choose "run" from the start menu and type "cmd" - enter "pathping <ip address>, or might even work with an url like firstgenfirebird.org.
You should then get a list of routers and their response times. Here's an example (note the unusually slow response on the second hop). A decent response time shouldn't be higher than 20 ms.

Judging by those numbers Im guessing one stick of memory has gone bad. Try removing and reinstalling them first, see if it helps, if not then remove one, test again, remove other and test, process of elimination. Wouldnt hurt to clean out your internet cache too...that can slow down internet performance.
Howdy No expert but it sounds like a hard drive. Mine did the same thing. Major slow down, beep....beep....beeps and finally crash no activity. This happened over a few days not all at once. Hard drive replaced and back in the saddle again.
I should have listened to those beeps.
If its not to late you should back up everything while you can.
Tom, beeps are one of two things...memory not correctly seated, or video card not correctly seated.
You were handling the memory...that would be my candidate. Take a good flashlight and remove the memory and look at the sockets for bent pins. If you see any...you can get a new motherboard.
Not likely video, as I believe you have onboard video in that system.

well, I reinstalled the old memory, no luck. Installed new memory 512/512, still the same beeping. Dan installed a new video card while I was on vacation and that solved the booting issue.

Is it steady/constant beeping, or intermittent? Intermittent is video. New card might have lifted from slot when you were playing musical memory. Be sure it's off, reseat the video card, power up again.

There is zero tolerance for bent pins/unseated modules. With power cord unplugged, remove both modules. Look at the sockets, something like 144 pins, it is possible to bend one pin and short the module or motherboard.
Try only one memory module, first in one socket then in the other. Be sure it latches into place firmly.

I now see the problem..as you stated.. Am I up the creek?
What I did was remove both memory chips and installed them wrong, not paying attention to the groove in the chipset. When I did that is when it went from wicked fast to wicked nothing. I seen there was a lot of dust and crap in there and wanted to blow it out with some compressed air. well, I screwed that up...like the processor and everything else. maybe I should stick to washing the cars.

New motherboard is about $70. Or the pin might be able to be straightened, but sometimes they break and usually they never go back just as they should.
If the PC will operate with only one module installed, that's a temporary way to deal with it. Otherwise our store can fix it up.
