I just got my 68 out on the road recently and I have run about 3 tank fulls of gas through it. It's an OHC6 1BBL and the calulated mileage was 22mpg the first time and 18mpg the second time.
I'm puzzled by two things:
1. It looks like the tank was replaced at some point...it looks like new. The fill tube is somewhat recessed from the plate that holds the rubber gasket. It takes a little work to get the gas cap off and it is impossible to pump fuel higher than the lowest setting on the pump trigger, without the fuel belching back out of the fill tube and spilling on the ground.
2. The second thing is that the original spec for tank capacity says 18.5 gal. I was below "E" when I filled up today and all that I could pump in was 12 gallons. The gas was right to the top of the fill tube.
The cap is vented and it does not look like the tank imploded, so that is what puzzles me. Does anyone else have issues like this? What is the correct position for the lip of the fill tube?
Well, that would explain the 12 gallon capacity. Do any others have problems with filling and the fuel nozzle? I can only run the nozzle at a trickle or else the fuel will come back up the neck and spill all over the place. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the filler neck was not positioned correcly when the fuel tank was installed. Thanks, Bob

Thanks for pointing out these threads. I guess I'm a bit "search impaired". I never would have thought that these quirky things are normal. I've had a 64 Cutlass, 68 Cutlass, 69 Camaro and never recalled seeing this kind of crazy stuff. The only thing that came close was that my fuel tank imploded on the 69 Camaro cause I used the wrong fuel cap.
MIne seems to want to shoot back primarily for the first few gallons, then seems to settle in at about 1/2-3/4 "throttle"..you get used to it after a bit..and a few soakings
I`ve run out of gas in mine twice , before I fixed the gas gauge, and both times could put 15 to 15.5 gal`s in the tank...so there`s about 2.5 gal of air...when full...
