Well, I went to the Daytona Spring Car Show yesterday and today. Someone recently told me that I also have the wrong shifter arm for my car. Here is what I have. I have the square arm w/ Husrt stamped into it, and it does not have the two bolts that hold it in place, it has the wedge type fit. However, mine does not hit the "bucket" at all when shifting and works perfectly. At the swap meet today I did find a round handle sifter that resembles the one Vikki posted a pic of. The number at the bottom of the chrome arm is: 6827. Does that sound correct for a 68 (Nov. 67 build) car? If so, I will buy it tomorrow for $75 (decent price?).
Also, I found a burlwood center dash piece that I would rate 7 out of 10 for $30, I do not need it, anyone here interested? I could pick it up tomorrow. The same person has a burlwood ash tray that I would rate an 8 to 8.5 for $25. I thought they were both well priced. Any takers, let me know tonight as I will be going back tomorrow morning...
If you have the flat one that doesn't hit the bucket then I would be willing to take that off your hands for my 67.
I have a new GM Restoration woodgrain center piece, still in the package, that I would be willing to let go. And also an original woodgrain ashtray that's nice. These are extra parts from the 67 project.

The shifter you have now could be for another GM car...It would not be for a FGF...If it has NO holes in the handle to bolt it in then it IS OE for GM.....The aftermarkets all had bolt holes....NOW there are NO dates on the shiftrs..They are Purchase Orders only...There is a guy I know that can narrow down the PO# and give it a date it was sent to gm from Hurst....I think the # should be 5325..BANSHEE you out there? I know he knows the # as well....If you are in need of the # before the show, let me know and I will dig thru my pile of parts and find the right one you need and tell you the #..
I think mine is a very new one. That would make it the bolt on kind. And since it fits really good in the console, just barely hits, it's the right offset body. The problem is that the arm is on an angle too soon. It's not straight up and down in the console hole.
If your s is a newer one and based on the original POS that Pontiac offered (as you posted in the pic) You are better off with the one you have as the original one was like punching the windshield out as you power shifted to 3rd LOL...I would much rather have what you have VS a straight handle. ... Just my 2 cents
I do like what I have BUT it's going to drive me nuts with the arm just barely hitting the plate like that. I'm going to eventually have to do something. I like things to work perfect and that little 'clink' when I bang it is going to have to 'be gone'!
I have it adjusted so that it almost touches at the front of the plate and it just barely hits at the back. It's the angle. The angle gives you less clearance....
I understand that....If you have adjusted it the best it can be, Then it sounds like you may have to go back to original OR change it to a new Hurst comp plus that has a very short throw and looks GREAT !
Hmmm, well I am heading to the show right now. I think after reading all of this I am going to hang on to the shifter I have for not until I can find the one that I know will be correct. The ONLY issue I have is the handle is square and I am told it should be round. Other than that it works 100% perfectly, no hitting, banging etc.
67 Firebird 400, if you happen to stumble on to a book that shows the number off that shifter I found (6827) stamped at the very bottom of the chrome just before it goes into the housing. Please feel free to call me as I would buy it today if it is correct... 716-908-8304 cell.
Also, if anyone out there needs and or wants those two burlwood pieces mentioned above, call my cell as I am leaving now...
Console holes have a little movement to them, except the two on the sides of the tunnel bracket. Remove those, loosen the other two, and adjust the console so it does not strike. Stick Easy Mask on the carpet and console to make your alignment marks. Move the j clips on the tunnel bracket or slot things as needed to get the right fit.
Never mind...took to long to write, old news now

No amount of plate or console moving will fix it if your handle is on a big angle inside the console. The handle profile/cross-section is wider on an angle. That's why the right one goes straight up and down in that area.....
I was going to look at moving the console forward a bit, but then the boot was misaligned to the bucket...which bothered me even more than the shifter hitting the bucket

Ok, I have found a 5325. A friend here in FL looked through his collection and found one for me. It needs to be re-chromed but other than that, it will work. One more item knocked off the list. Now I can't wait to get it re-chromed and install it with the new blue printed M21! Getting there little by little, step by step...
Keep in mind when you rechrome a shifter handle That you should cover the threads on the top (where the shift ball will go) with nuts.....I have seen too many rechromed shifter handles that peel as soon as you screw on a shifter ball.
Went to see the other '68, also has a Hurst embossed round bar, OEM style insert and clip design. And again the old rubber wasn't giving up the handle so I couldn't get the numbers but it looks like the other two.
Have one more on another car...

Ok, I have located a 5325 shifter handle. I've got to repair a few knicks/gouges etc. then have it plated. However, now I realize my shifter housing is not correct because on mine, the handle has the offset bend in it, not the housing itself.
Anyone know the part number for the housing itself. I guess it's called the "shifter body"? I am hoping this part is more common than the shift arm itself.
Now that I know that I have the wrong shifter, it's driving me crazy. Even though my existing one works perfectly. LOL
I also wondering if all of my linkages will work once I get the new shifter body. I would think that they will, but then again the way things have been going I will guess not...
There actually is no part # on an original shifter body...Only a Purchase Order # from Hurst to GM...There is a way to put the PO# against the order date to show when it was made....As far as original, once you see one you will know that it is original as the offset looks like none others......Keep in mind that the side of the shifter body has a stamp on it I think it is #3802?...That is the # for the side piece only and not the part# for the shifter like everyone thinks....what about your friend that the handle came from?....The handle ONLY goes with the correct shifter for your car...Actually it goes for ONLY 1968,1969 Firebirds AND 1969 Camaro's....hope this helps
67, thank you for reminding me. I know you explained that to me when we spoke. I am going to my buddies house today and will look to see if he has the body to go with the handle...
Hurst says in their FAQs that their aftermarket shifter bodies do not fit factory rods, and vice-versa. I have no firsthand knowledge whether this is true as my shifters are all complete factory pieces.

Aftermarket bodies use bolt on handles. That's the difference...
Well, based on the fact that I was able to find the shift handle, I should now be able to find a shift body. At this point I am going for the correct parts. Otherwise I'd keep what I have and move on with something else. LOL
All because my current shift handle is square and it's supposed to be round. Man, I never thought I'd get to this point where I'd be worried about something so trivial! Oh well, me and my big ideas about going stock this, stock that, OEM, original blah blah blah...
Ok, I now have the shifter body as well. Went to my friends house and dug through a few totes and sure enough we found one. The number on the shifter housing is 1-6-A-1 and is identical to the one Vikki posted pics of. However, the shifter handle is marked a 5325 as some of you stated as being the correct one, but is does not look like the one in Vikki's pic. The 5325 is straighter with much less bend. Here are two pics of the 5325:
