Unless you have a closed system and the overflow tank, dont top off...when "cold", water/coolant should be 3" below the neck...when "hot" 1" below... but sounds like youre ok now...
I don't, only because its original. I haven't had any problems, but I rarely drive more than a few miles at a time.
I had meant to ask in the past whether it was worth adding an overflow with new cap.

I do, but still dont use it...I have it just to see IF I run over I can check how much I lost , plus it wont go on the ground for pets not to lick up... I still fill up to 3" below the neck....have a stock radiator...
Keep my coolant about an 1" or 2 below rad cap level and use a Summit style chrome can. But i reverse it. Hose to bottom, radiator pit [censored] on top. No over flow problems.
