I am new here, so it might be already discussed. After some bad experiences with another car, I decided to add temperature gauges for oil and water. A place for the water temp. sending unit was easy to find. I used a spare plug in my manifold.
But where can I put the sending unit for the oil temp. sending unit to? The one in the oilfilter housing is already filled by the original pressure sending unit. Are there alternative places or do I need a T-adapter?
Thank you and sorry for the bad English! I am from Germany and not so used to all those technical phrases.
Be careful using a Tee. I used a 1/8" brass nipple from the filter housing into a Tee, then hung a heavy sending unit on it. It made for a handy fatigue test of the nipple (which it failed). Maybe a steel nipple would be safe. Hey, we're speaking Deutch on another thread about heads. I'll bet your English is much better than our German.
Where in Germany? I spent 2 years working for the U.S. Army in Neu Ulm and 4 years in Heilbronn in the '80's and early '90's. My 1st wife still lives there.

LEMMI...I DON'T THINK A TEE WILL WORK VERY WELL FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. IN ORDER FOR A TEMP SENSOR TO MEASURE PROPERLY, IT NEEDS TO HAVE A CONSTANT FLOW OF LIQUID OVER IT, OR BE IMMERSED IN THE LIQUID. IF YOU USE A TEE IT WILL ONLY MEASURE THE STAGNANT POOL OF LIQUID IN THE TEE. A BETTER SOLUTION WOULD BE TO HAVE A BUNG WELDED TO THE SIDE OF YOUR OIL PAN; LOW AND CLOSE TO THE PICKUP......JOHN

thank you for the very nice welcome everybody gave me! I was in vacation for 2 weeks so I could not answer. Sorry for that!
For some of you! I live in Heilbronn, so Salmon you KNOW where I live. You could have even seen my Firebird, since I brought it over from San Mateo, CA in summer 93. Actually we miss the Americans here a bit.
While reading your posts I came away from the thought of using a T-piece. That position next to the distributor seems interesting, but I can hardly see the position you mean on the picture. Could you please an arrow. Is there an opening for an adapter - similar to the one in the front of my intake manifold for the water temp sensor?
Are you really discussing something in German here??? Strange! But if you need an arbitor (?), just let me know! ;-)
Lemmi, I sent you a private message about Germany so we won't interrupt this thread here.

I just looked at the picture of the distributor at another computer and it was much better visible. But I still cannot locate the place you were talking about. But I noticed, that you were talking about putting the PRESSURE sensor there and installing the TEMP sensor to the oil filter adapter. Reading helps! ;-)

Cheers Lemmi
I made a line from corner to corner on the photo to form an "X". The intersection of the lines is almost exactly on the plug.(actually I just held an envelope up to my monitor to get the lines)
I did not find the picture, but I think I know, where the plug is: It is the one at about 2 o'clock of the distributor with 2 numbers/letters above it. Right?
I hooked up a gauge set for my bird Thursday. I was gonna use the plug by the dist but I couldn't get the bugger out. I thought it would be 3/8 but no. I ended up just putting a "T" by the sending unit for the idiot light. All in all it was easy and it sure is nice to know the oil press & temp. I also have a manifold vacuum gauge that the PO installed under the ignition key. It looks like 70's vintage and it says Pontiac on the faceplate. I took the time to repair it since I was working on gauges( small obstruction in the inlet ). I had to replace a couple of bulbs and now all my dash lights work and dim properly.
I tried to put the sensor right where the yellow arrow shows to (Thank you Bob!), but before removing the plug, I noticed, that my sensor has a different thread size, so I will need an adaptor. Does anybody know the threadsize of the plug?
@Oneshotleft: Do you have a picture of your "T-solution"?
The senders are usually 1/8 inch IPS. The hole in the block might be 3/8 inch IPS (somebody can back me up). You might want to see if you can budge that plug before you start looking for adaptors.
It must feel like waiting in hell, for parts to arrive from overseas. Post some photos of your cars when ya get the chance. We would love to see your 'bird, Cooper and Lotus!
I do not have any Mini-pictures here, because it was not driveable when I've got it. I am working on it for a long time now and all my pictures are on the camera I have in my garage. So be patient! ;-)
Lemmi, look up Thomas Brandl on this site, he is in Munich, and has just restored a nice bird...interesy=tingly ,his car is the same color as yours! ..he also seems very knowledgeable about the car... I`ll see if I can find his pm address for you...
Greetings from Bjorn (from Sweden originally, spent a few sumers in Fallingbostel , between Hamburg and Hannover...also travelled thru Germany many times when I still lived in Sweden.....my Swedish ex wifes aunt lives close to Ulm ,so visited there also...)
thank you for the contact, but I am already in contact with Thomas. His car is really great! And we - or at least I am thinking about a meeting of our cars. It would certainly be nice to have the two same-colored cars next to each other.
I found Thomas here in the FGF-forum! It's absolutely great and I cannot understand what I did in the last 15 years without it.
So, now I am taking a ride with my Bird. The weather is great here!
