Simple question I need an answer for. I guess I could figure this out on my own somehow, but it is so much easier asking someone on this site?
I want to do an oil change on my 68 Firebird 400. What viscosity and brand of oil should I use and how much would I need? Would a filter be available at a local auto store? What brand of filter is okay to use and would you also no the part #?
you can use 20W-20,10W-30,10W-40,20W-40,20W-50...(personally I like the 10-30 and 10-40)20-50 might be a little heavy ,esp in colder weather yes ,you can buy an oil filter in a regualar parts store ... Wix is a good brand, no part no necessary
Lots of discussion lately on new oils with reduced zinc additive (ZDDP). Some of us use 15W40 Shell Rotella since it's a diesel oil and has higher levels of ZDDP than car oil.
I like 20-50 synthetic, I don't drive my car in winter anyway
1969 Firebird 350 Coupe, Rust free Texas body, formerly brown, now a TA clone with quality spoiler, latching hood and TA wheel; 1969 GTO Convertible Expresso Brown/Parchment(currently painted red). Both numbers matching. My first love was a Cameo White 67 326 Coupe, bought back in 1983, at the age of 17, for $1,200. Been hooked since on PONTIAC! Working on a 67 400 ragtop for customization-Gulf Turquoise/Parchment/400/4 spd! My winter project!
I still try to use the recommendations of the '68 Owner's Manual
Note that the underlining was done by a Pontiac Service Manager in 1969-70. I had taken my 400HO into the dealer because the lifters sounded noisy. The service manager, knowing that my 400 was a 400HO, asked what grade oil I had used and I said 10W30 like the manual shows. He said I missed the small print that says the HO requires 30W. The lifters have been quiet for the next 39 years.
The oil change I did a couple days ago was conventional Pennzoil (what it's used most of it's life) SL code , 3/4 bottle of ZDDPlus, and an AC PF24.
As always, the longbranch manifold with the TH400 provided it's normal messy puzzle getting the filter off.
