My repro remote outside door mirror for my 68 driver´s door looks just the same as this NOS 1968 remote mirror (ebay item number: 290258414135, see link below):
Nevertheless, I was told the repros are not correct because the part of the bracket that points to the rear is peaked whereas they should have an end that looks like being cut off, resulting in an tapered off square end.
Now - what´s correct? Does this NOS mirror differ from mine (except from these 2 small holes at the mirror´s underside) or is it simply not correct for a 68 Bird?
I don't think the Ebay NOS mirror is correct. I agree that it shouldn't be pointed (in my opinion). This looks like a 69 mirror. I saw this one myself earlier today and asked the seller for the part number off the box.
We need someone here to provide a pic of their original remote mirror. Banshee stated a while back that he had an original remote mirror on a 68 he bought.

Bluebird's is the same as my '69 remote mirror as well. And is the same as the illustration in the assembly manual.
I have a mirror that looks like the eBay one. The mounting on my example is not the same as the factory mounting on my '69 remote mirror, instead of the studs on the '69 it has a plate that screws to the door.

I think that NOS mirror is a 69 Camaro mirror. My 69 Bird has the same one as bluebird's
Yes, I agree. It looks exactly like a Camaro mirror - I didn't mention that in my earlier post. That's why I asked the seller for the part # off the box. I made the mistake of buying what I thought was a 68 repro remote mirror a couple of years ago from a local dealer who advertised a 68 Camaro mirror as that for a 68 Firebird. He delivered part number 3921816. I think the 68 and 69 Camaro remote mirrors looked very similar but I could be wrong. If the seller does provide the number, I'll bet it's either 3921816 or 3957203 (a 68 or 69 Camaro mirror).
It's hard to see, but here's a pic of a remote mirror from an Ebay posting a while back where the guy said it was off a 68 Firebird. The base looks a bit different. And I had no way of validating if this was in fact a 68 Firebird remote mirror because 1) I've never seen one up close that I know is authentic and 2) the seller at the time never responded with the part number off the base. I believe that part number is 3934583.

Didn't notice the seller provided pics of the part number on the box lid and from the top of the mirror itself:

I think we may have a winner. If this is the case, then the STARTING bid is at $349.99 (ouch). BUT..this mirror looks exactly like a repro of a 68 Camaro mirror (3921816) that costs around $100.00:
I bid on it but he got it.If I'm not mistaken he has a few 1st gen ramair cars and lives up in Montana. If it's the same guy I'm thinkng of I talked to him about a couple of them he had for sale. They were both in need of a total resto. I have the reproduction mirror and it's pretty cheap. I suspect the chrome wont last very long by the looks of it. I have a few 68 remote mirrors like the one in auction but they need to be plated and being potmetal I was quoted $250-300 for 3 pieces. I guess it beats $500 !

Ditto. The '69 standard and remote Pontiac mirrors have a blunt point compared to that fine tapered point. I made the mistake of buying one like that. I'm sure it was for the '70 model year Camaro.
