The "competition" took me out to lunch yesterday and something didn't seem right. Found out today that two guys that used to work with me and now work over there were talking bad about me to the manager. They are two of the guys that were mentioned to me that are on the list to be let go because they are not pulling their weight. So I am pissed now! After all the times I covered for them when they were late to work and let them go home early, they did me wrong. And now they are spreading it around that I am trying to leave, so I don't know what is going to happen. Only a matter of time before it gets to my boss. Luckily the girls in the office like me so they will be my spies to let me know what rumors are going around. I just want to call the manager over there and say that if you believe them after there poor work performance then I don't want to work for you anyways!
If what your source says is true, that is a stab in the back from your former co-workers. I bet they are saying that because if you join their work, they know they will look bad. (Little do they realize they do already.) If this manager has any sense, I doubt he will consider that info true from the guys he's planning on firing. Just stay calm and let the dice roll where they may. If that manager believes their lies, then you are better off not working for him.

i agree. i am the bad guy in my company. if you or your people are not doing it right, or standing around with there thumb inserted. i will speak my mind to you and the help.(not complain to owners) and this has hurt many peoples feeling, but the owner knows were i'm coming from. even though he has had to listen to many hurt egos. many have tried to trash me and use the old back stab move, but to no avail. at the end, when all the beans are counted, my pile is 4X bigger then there. So if management doesn't relize these thing happen and there cause, your better off without them. tim
I got yelled at for about 2 and 1/2 hours on Friday from a customer about what a crappy job another employee did, I was not even remotely involved with the job or even in the same department, but my office sent me out there to "clean up" the mess. After the b---h session I called the guy that did the job, his boss and my branch manager, non of which answered their phone, it was only 1:30pm, so I left them all a voicemail. Not one of them called me back! So Monday morning I went to the office and I saw the guy's boss in the office and he didn't say one word about the job. So I told the service dispatcher to send the guy that did the job out there to fix the problem. This is about the 3rd time they have done this to me recently, put me in a bad situation and not answer their phone, so I am about at my last straw. So I have another interview setup for Monday with a very small company. I'm kind of leery about a small company since there is little room for "downsizing" but I am working at our small Ft Worth office with a total of about 30 people. The catch 22 is that I'm in the middle of trying to figure out what is wrong with my health right now, so I can't afford to go without health insurance and I don't know how long it will take for them to figure it out. Here are their specs, it's amazing what you can find on the internet!
Location Type: Single Location Est. Annual Sales: $690,000 Est. # of Employees: 10 Est. Empl. at Loc.: 10 Year Started: 1994 State of Incorp: TX Average Salary: $64,000
when I ran our dealership, I told everyone that if you had a customer get upset about anything , not to point fingers or say it was another employees fault or another depts fault.....the customer doesnt care, he/she only wants the wrong fixed.. just take it upon yourself and say , : I`m sorry WE messed up, WE will fix it", then fix the problem or take it to appropriate dept head and have them sort it out...dont let the customer ever see or hear any finger pointing ,it doesnt solve the problem , it only makes the customer more mad, because he feels like its more important within your company to blame ea other than to fix his problem,, and to him , his problem is no 1...should be to your company too.
Talk about be'n between a rock and a hard place. Can you change positions in your company? Or move to a different department? From your post's it probly wouldnt help cause it sounds like a management problem. But may give you a nice change of pace till you find a better company to work for.

I was sent out there with very very little information about the problem because the service dispatcher didn't really know what was wrong, I didn't do the job and don't work in service so I know very little about that particular kind of job. The customer was questioning me about someone else's paperwork that I have never seen or filled out before, which looked pencil whipped, I had to tell him I didn't do the job! I tried to get hold of several people, including our branch manager to get info for the customer on how we are going to fix it with absolutely no response, talk about professional! And the fix was our office wanted me to hang tags on the standpipes that I never tested and don't know if the other guy tested which involves my license issued to me from the State Fire Marshall's Office, not my company, and holds some pretty serious penalties if they find something wrong with paperwork or the standpipes in question.

My job is to serious to risk 2 years jail time, $2,000 fine, losing my work licenses and my job for me to let things slide.
I have not and hope to never have to go to court and be questioned about a job that I never did because a Fireman tried to use that standpipe and it didn't function properly causing his or other peoples deaths. A few of our guy's have had to go to court over the years, nobody died but, for damages to property because the system was documented by them to be in perfect working order and it ended up not working properly.
Stick to your morals and don't get bullied into doing something that your gut is telling you not to do. Always go with your gut feelings it will rarely let you down. Good Luck.
sounds like a change of scenery might be beneficial.... what I was referring to abv, was mainly for your superiors....THEY should not let anybody take blame...its the company that screwed up, not a single individual, even if an individual did it...its the comany that should have the guts to tell its employees , empower them ,to say "Sorry WE screwed up, WE will fix it"...customer needs not to know who in the comany did it, they dont care, they just want the job done right!
The obvious fix would have been to send the guy that did the job but because our office is stuck on making the numbers, they didn't want the guy that did the job to drive all the way from Abilene to fix his own problem. And a lot of the time I have to fight with the customer to get the job fixed properly, since we are all about the numbers and the customer comes last.

Sounds like it's time to move on when you get the right opportunity. I'm not sure about your industry but mine (printing) is a lot smaller world than you might think. It's the same as the statement "Don't burn any bridges" the work that you do there will follow you where ever you go. It's just a matter of time before you start to run into old co-workers,customers, and sales people. If your working for a company with bad work ethics it can also bring you down in the end.

sounds like the owner of your company need to learn about business...every business is the same..."you sell widgets" whatever widgets are...tvs, cars ,service ,architecture, yourself... you need to do two things to have a succesful business , 1) make the customer happy 2) make a profit
and usually ,if you make your customers happy , no 2 will follow!
you do those two things , business grows , you make money......it is very simple...
when I took over my dads dealerships in the 83 down market I grew both while the businnes in total city went down....no 1 goal, "make the customers happy"...
This is a large international company that has come to the reasoning over the years that the customer need us and we don't need customer because they are replaceable. The company had a revenue of $76.9 billion in 2007 and employs 918,000 people across all 50 states and in more than 60 countries. Employees and customers are just another # to them.
Look again at the numbers you posted for that company you plan to interview with. $690,000 in sales and 10 employees, avg $64,000 a year salary. $64,000 x 10 = $640,000. Do you think that $50,000 is enough gross profit to pay for all inventory, rent, utilities, equipment...not a chance.
My business does over $600K a year with 2 employees and does a little better than break even on $125,000 gross with no frills, and wages half what that company states.

Those are just the numbers I found on the net, not sure how accurate they are but does seem like a very small company. Maybe there is some money transfer under the table. Plus I'm sure they are paying some of their employees next to nothing.
Even though the Americans with Disabilities Act says that you can't be disciminated against for your heath problems, it may be had to get hired with your pre-existing condition. Be careful.
I don't want to be tormented by my co-workers poor work and be treated as a number being counted down everyday until the next layoff. I don't want to quit it's just that it has continually gotten worse over the decade I've been there and don't think I can handle much more. I was so frustrated last Friday that I wanted to cry but I forgot how somewhere along the way since this job has made me into somewhat of a jerk. I can handle crap at work or crap at home but not both at the same time. It's hard juggling my health while I'm getting yelled at by a customer or waiting for the next layoff due to losing more customers and management that doesn't care about me or the customer, only profit margins. Do you really think the branch manager cares about me or the 2 guys he laid off 3 days before Christmas or the other 8 guys he laid off before that, not to mention the 2 that quit because of him. He won't even return my call to try to fix a problem with a fairly big customer that was openly wanting to get ride of us last year. This is why I want to figure out what is wrong with me asap because it is one less thing to worry about. And if I do quit I want to take in a camera and video tape me telling him off for all my friends he let go for no reason other than making the numbers look good.

As tempting as it is to tell your boss off, your better off just walking away once you have another job. You will probably need him as a reference again when looking for another job. Don't let him make your life any more difficult than he has already. Your boss will get what's coming to him in his own time. Lousy customer service will hurt him in the end.

A passive approach will solve nothing. I think you should start applying pressure on the situation until you fix it, break it or get fired.
Dump the US vs Them perspective, align yourself with both views and start barking solutions on how to achieve results in customer support, profit, whatever. Don't ask or seek approval, just start doing it.
Be a leader, stay focused on eliminating waste. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain so start acting that way.

I agree with that to a point but not to the point of getting yourself fired. From what I understand, Jeremy has been speaking up about matters and they refuse to listen or follow his advice. It's going nowhere. I think it's better to find another job and walk away with a good reference than to get fired over something they refuse to change. A person can't force a person to change if they don't want to. Let them take themselves down while Jeremy betters himself.

I agree with JM as well. But do have a backup plan if you can, or be prepared to go without a job if necessary until you secure one. I am now managing IT in a large call center, and I have to make the decisions on what is most important. And in the end, the most important tasks, menial as they may be, are the ones that keep the customer satisfied.
If you cannot immediately line up a job, you have to make the choice as to which is worse for your health, family and sanity, keeping your job or being without one.
You could also take in interim job to pay the bills while looking for something more suitable. If you can afford it, COBRA will allow you to keep your insurance for a while.

Not to hijack the thread, but great to hear from JM!
Hope everything is going well!
Now, back to our originally scheduled thread...

and don't put too much stock in a good reference... I won't disclose anything more than length of employment and if you are eligible for rehire.. I am seldom asked more... the real danger is how YOU present the seperation to your next prospective employer..
Interview today was a waste of time, it seems the more I look the better I have it, at least benefit wise. Plus they were looking for a planner and sprinkler installer which I do neither, not saying I wouldn't mind it just don't have any experience for them. Dumb job recruiter!
Sorry things didn't work out. It sounds like your better off not at this company. Think of it this way, your getting in your interview practice for when the right job comes along.

So I think I'll use unemployment if I get laid off until I get another job, I feel I've earned it after almost 11 years with them.
The company I interviewed for:
no 401k no healthcare no PTO 5 paid holidays 1 week vacation after a year, 2 weeks after 5 years! company truck company gas card company phone good pay, but how good can it be with no 401k or healthcare!

Some companies are starting to cut the 401K match due to the hard times. Who knows if they will reverse it when times get better. I keep watching my health care get more expensive every renewal time with higher deductiables. It seems like the insurance is only good for major medical. Which is great but when you have two yound kids at home doctor visits get expensive real fast. Vacation at our work is as follows 1 week 1 year 2 weeks after 2 years 3 weeks after 5 years and 4 weeks after 15 years. I pushed for the 4th week of vaction and after a couple of years they broke down and gave it to us. We had no pto but now get two days a year. With the economy the way it is I'm sure the benefits have been cut back on all new hires.
What I have right now, the other company doesn't even compare:
4 weeks vacation (paid) 5 days of PTO (paid) 3 floating holidays (basically PTO,paid) 11 holidays (paid) company van company gas card company phone good pay 401k matched up to 5% cheap healthcare
no 401k no healthcare no PTO 5 paid holidays 1 week vacation after a year, 2 weeks after 5 years! company truck company gas card company phone good pay, but how good can it be with no 401k or healthcare!
No real benefits especially health is not good at all. That's usually the dilemma with working for big corporations or state government. The benefits are great but sometimes you deal with BS. I would still keep your eye open for opportunities but you might want to wait to get another job until you know what your health situation is first.

WOW!! Some pretty good benefits there. But, sometimes it's not worth it if the working conditions suck. Just a reminder the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence until you get over there.
Vacation at our work is as follows 1 week 1 year 2 weeks after 2 years 3 weeks after 5 years and I pushed for 4 weeks after 15 years, but no such luck! 5 holidays/year 401 k plan health benefits... but beats working fo myself as I did for 6 yrs...I was a lousy boss , gave myself NO vacation, NO paid holidays!
Not sure if you are aware but my brother Jeremy passed away January 22. He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident close to his home. I see that you guys had been corresponding so I just thought you should know. Thank you for being so kind to my brother, wishing him Happy Birthday, giving him help and advice about his car, health, job, etc... I plan to take over his project on the 67 coupe and finish it in his honor. You may see me on here from time to time.
I am sorry to hear that. I had talked to Jeremy a number of times regarding his '67 as well.
Keep us up to date regarding the project.
