I am the proud owner of this 1967 Firebird H.O. Convertible I spent 7 years restoring. It is numbers matching and 98% correct in Montreaux Blue paint, deluxe parchment interior with a 3-speed floor shift manual and a 3.36:1 differential that includes both traction bars.
It goes out on nice days and to shows. If it is too hot for the drop-top or I feel like going fast I like to drive it's garage mate, this 2005 Impulse Blue, 6-speed GTO with ~15K miles on it now. Never driven in the rain.
Well, to be honest, I did everything except the bodywork and paint. There was alot of welding to do and I wasn't about to learn on my first project.
Almost all the sheetmetal is new, the only original pieces left are the hood, trunk, and firewall... new fenders, qp's, one door skin, trunk pan, floor pans.
The steering wheel was cracked in several places but ion good otherwise. I V-notched out the cracks and filled with epoxy putty.
I did everything else. Sat on my driveway with a sandblaster for three summers cleaning everything, did the mechanics (engine, tranny, electrical) during winter months and refinished the interior myself. The only mechanical work I did not do was the rebuild of the diff.
I used the Eastwood metal blackening and tin plating kits for many bolts/nuts.
I learned alot, and pounded my head against the wall many times searching for parts and info. Luckily there are some good swap meets in Indiana such as the Auburn auctions. It is such a rare beast (anybody know?), close in rarity to maybe the 400's. I am still looking for a carb since I found out mine is not original and is from a 389.
I got a Celebrities Choice Best Pontiac award this summer from GM director of design, that was cool.
You are just the guy I've been looking for... considering a parchment interior myself.. yours looks fantastic... a few more pics sometime this summer would be soon enough.
Hoy hoy Larry from Indy. Wouter brings up a good point, you could have saved yourself that bump on the head, even if ya had been lurking. Very nice resto! Looks like ya started with almost nothing.
You spent seven years restoring, and I just spent the last seven paying mine off. Hope you consider bringing your 'bird to the T/A Nationals in Dayton, Ohio this year. You've got a trophy winner there. Welcome aboard!

So why did you come here after your project is finished?? You didn't know about this site through your entire resto???
Well I didn't know much about this site, I have lurked in many places over the years, particularly the Performance Years site as there a lot of knowledgeable folks over there. When I started the project (~1995) their were not nearly as many resto parts and info available for Firebirds, especially my H.O.. The web was still young and few even knew what an H.O. was or had seen one. Even PHS couldn't tell me much about it.
I was inspired by seeing Jim Mattinson's 'bird at the TA Nat's one year, mine will never be that perfect (I am throwing around the idea of a Dynacorn body for it) and I used the HPP magazines articles about it for many parts of my resto.
The head pounding was due to mostly not knowing what resources were available to me or how to get around some of the problems I had. Things like how to get those convertible headers on damage free or what to do about the traction bar bushings.
I managed to find an NOS Muncie 3-speed shifter for it by accident as those were common throw-away items back in the day. Parts for the 326 seem rare nowadays too since most opted to upgrade to a 400.
Larry, I noticed in the pic of your interior, you have the deluxe (upgrade) wood shifter knob. Does the button on top have the Pontiac crest (arrowhead)?

Yeah, I bought it with the shifter and is vintage too (although not stock).
