It appears both of the axles on my '67 bird are ruined. When I took them to the machine shop to get new bearings pressed, they slid right off after the collar was removed. Underneath, there was quite a large gouge carved into both axles.
Does anyone have any information where I may be able to find spares? Any help would be appreciated.
There are undersize bearings available to fit worn shafts. The machine shop/auto parts supplier may be able to get together to get you set up if they are not too far gone.
New shafts are available. They are not cheap. Moser are very expensive, I can't recall the name of the brand I bought but they were $125 each. Contact your local ring and pinion or drivetrain shop for sources.

I can guarantee that the one I got from Terry a few years back , now has about additional 10 k miles on it and is very compatible with the rest of my 40 yr old car....
When I replaced the rear axle Bearings in my K5 Blazer the shafts were grooved. The new bearings I got were offset so they mounted in a little different spot on the axle to avoid the groove. At least that's how I remember it going, its been a while! Maybe there is such a thing for yours??
Thank you for the offer ebd!! I would be happy to pay shipping from Texas. I do have a few questions, however. Did these come out of a 67-69 Firebird? Are the bearings off the axles to see if there are grooves.
I know they say beggars can't be choosers, and I'm really not trying to be a pain. I'm just wanting to make sure that these are good to avoid the same problem I am in right now.
Thanks again so much for the kind offer! It really means a lot to me and I appreciate everyone's help with this issue. Everyone on here is so great!
They came out of a 67 coupe that was running and driving fine. The axles are still in the housing. I can take them out and look for damage. What am I looking for? Let me know if you want me to take them out. Hell, the bearings may be fine for all I know. EB Texas
If it's not too much trouble, that would be great! As far as damage, I'm really not sure myself. I know that when we took my axles out there was quite a bit of slop in the bearings and the axles slid out pretty easily. From what I can gather, the bearings freeze up and the inner race rotates on the axle which creates the groove. The way I found out was to have a machine shop remove the collar and bearing, which revealed the groove/wear underneath.
The collar should be down tight on the bearing, so I do not think there will be much movement as far as rocking the bearing back and forth to see if there is a groove.
If there is anyone that can help us figure out what to look for as far as axle damage/grooves, please let us know. Again, thank you everyone for the help!
And an update on my project. I worked all day on the 'bird and got the entire undercarriage primered and painted with undercoating.
After talking with a few people it was suggested that I buy new aftermarket axles . With the bearings being pressed on and held by the collar it is difficult to determine whether there are grooves under the bearing, short of having someone remove the bearings. I do not intend to ask you to do that for me.
Looking at the number of views I have on this thread I am just happy to have so many fellow 'bird fanatics helping me out with information and offers. That means a lot to me.
Hopefully I will be able to order some axles soon, but they are currently on backorder. The ones I am looking at are from a company called Alloy USA out of Georgia. They have a 10 year warranty and are under $100 each on Summit's website.
