Heres the deal with my 68. About mid last August, it started suddenly spitting gas up through the carb. Never got the time to mess with it, so late Sept or so I pushed it in my garage, took off the carb, and there it has sat since.
Got a carb rebuild kit and a friend of mine did it, and took his sweet time. Finally got the carb back early this year, and finally got the time to put it on. Fired up, but backfired badly. Adjusting the timing seemed to have done the trick, now I got to tweak the carb mix.
Ran it about 15 minutes and something was smoking underneath, so I turned it off and waited for things to cool down a bit before having a look. Turns out the plastic housing that covers the flywheel and starter nose came unscrewed on one side, and it rested right on a header, which of course melted that part of it beyond recognition. While I was under there I noticed that the header tape, which I put on about 6 years ago, needs replacing. Since the starter is just inches from the header tubes, I really have to have this stuff, I have hot start problems as it is, without that exhaust wrap the starter would be roasted.
So, got me a new pack of header wrap, and am going to finally replace the battery cable which runs to the starter. Was hoping that I could do this without dropping the starter, but it looks like I'll probably have to drop it.
Am hoping top get it on the road, say, mid July at the latest, which will give me a couple months of fun at least, and give me time to work out the problems that are sure to come. I know I need some brake work, and the last couple years the steering fluid leaks out within a few hours of driving, not sure where the problem lies but I intend to find out.
Heres a few pics of my precious beast, getting tuned for the road.
