I was looking at buying the complete 4 disc conversion brake kit and was wondering if anyone had bought one from them. The kit seems complete (minus brake lines). It doesn't say who its made by, so I didn't know what kind of quality it is. Just thought I'd ask before I drop any cash on it. Thanks!!! Kyle
67 Verdoro Green 400 Front bench w/auto on column Now excepting- free, ready to bolt on, Pontiac Aluminum Heads... Thanks to John(Hammered)-- This project is REBORN!! http://s903.photobucket.com/albums/ac237/lupdiesel/
I purchased my front disc conversion kit from them for my 68'. The boxes that I got had the Right Stuff Detailing written on them they are located in Sunbury, Ohio you will save alot on shipping.
I bought from them and the kit was made by "the right stuff" very happy with quality. Mine was front disc only. And yes the lines are sold seperately. I acutually found there listing on Ebay, you might get a better deal if you can bid on it.
I just got off the phone with the Right Stuff Detailing. The front disc conversion kit is a reproduction of that found on a 69' Firebird. This kit bolted right on no issues. The rear disc conversion kit they tell me is not exactly a direct bolt on. The rotors are from a 79' Firebird, the calipers are form a 78-81 Cadillac Eldorado. The issues are that where the rotor fits over the axle, the rotor hole may need to be opened up about 1/16" of an inch to fit over the axle. The other issue is that the OD (outside diameter) of the axle may need to be turned down the fit the rotor. If you call them speak to a gentleman by the name of Bear in the tech dept. Here is there web site.
Not a problem, that's what this site is all about. I'm somewhat knowledgeable in this area because of doing the front brake conversion, and I did not want to tackle the rear brakes for the reasons I stated in the previous posts.
i bought that 4 wheel kit. i hope you have some car experience. defintely not 100% bolt as claimed. i did have to file rear rotors as pete pointed out. had to get brake line adapter for proportioning valve to rear brake line and replaced line to front driver side. me and "matt" went back and forth several times with being told to call right stuff, then right stuff wanted order number to send me missing parts. jeez. what a headache. not even done installing yet. 2 bolts were missing for front kit. right stuff sent those to me. rear set directions skipped a step for connecting rear brake rubber hose to brake line. right stuff said shorten line 6". there's a mounting bracket for rear rubber hose that needs to be tack welded to axle, or use a big hose clamp, per right stuff. i bolted a bracket to clamp, then clamped it to axle. i'll probably be changing rear so i didn't want to weld yet.
other than all that, piece of cake. if i ever get it together and on the road, i'll let you knwo how it works. i've since been told that if front and rear rotors are the same size, rears may tend to lock up first. i haven't measured mine yet. good luck
p.s. "matt" got pretty p.o.'d when i'd had enough and left him negative feedback
69inoviedo, Did you buy the new brake lines when you put this kit on? You said you had to use an adapter for the prop. valve. Are you using the stock rearend for this kit?? I'm going to get a complete parts list and pick up from "The Right Stuff" plant in Columbus. I'm a mechanic (booo!!) and know a machinist so I think I could tackle the rear brake mods. Thanks for the heads up so I can get all my ducks in a row before I jump in head first!! -Kyle
only the new line to the driver side front brake. i got an adapter for where the rear brake line came into the proportioning valve. the original fitting was smaller than the hole on the new valve. same proble for front driver but couldn't find the right adapter. valve now sits right up against fender well but not a problem. bracket for valve needed a second hole drilled in it too for lower stud on firewall wall(below drivers stud that master cylinder bolts to). glad i could help
I got a 4 Wheel complete kit from Matt's. I got it a while ago and the bird is still not on the road yet. I also got all new lines from them. My kit is a CPP kit and have had no issues (yet at least) Everything is installed. I emailed Matt a few times my self and always got quick responses, even on Sunday. The rear calipers are both the same. So one goes towards the front and the other goes towards the rear. The instructions weren't too clear on that part. Mines a '68 & I'm guessing its because of the staggered shocks. One E brake cable is longer than the other so it'll work. I have a 12 bolt rear and on the driver's side the little line clip on the tube is on the opposite side as the brake line since the caliper is opposite. The kit as a great "OEM look" to it and so far I'm happy with it. Hopefully I can give a road test report one day...
