Hello I am new to the site and appreciate the opportunity to post here. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about 2 Firebird Convertibles that were supposedly given away in possibly 1968 to Miss America and the runner up. I have searched online but can't find any info. Thanks in advance for any info.
I should hopefully have some articles or paper work regarding it tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath to see if it actually appears that's why I was asking about it here. I figuered you guys would know. As far as Playboy cars go does anyone know if they gave some of those away in 68. I know that in 67 it was Ford Mustangs.
Hello Wouter Thanks for your post. I did search for "miss america" etc on the site and couldn't find anyting. I know they made pink mist firebirds I have seen a few. My only question was about a cars given away at the 68 miss america pageant. Have you seen anything regarding this subject? Thanks
Not sure ,but in my mind ,somewhere in my memory banks I have a mental picture of Nancy Sinatra with a pink bird??? Or did she have a pink sweater on??
I think I`ve seen pics of her w birds as part of advertising campaign...
Yes, I have had someone contact me about a contest and game show about winning them.
From the FAQs I put some information about one:
Pageant Car I remember a local guy here in Orlando had an orange (Carousel Red) and parchment 69 Firebird convertible that had a note on the build sheet about it being some kind of a beauty pageant car, used in Miami or Palm Beach. There were a few f those built, and I think awarded to winners.
A: You've sparked my curiousity since I own a Firebird with similar history. I purchased a car from Florida about 3 years ago from the second owner . I got the original bill of sale, protecto-plate etc. It is an original carousel red/parchment convertible car (and still is - but a tad tired).
On the bottom of the build sheet (found under the back seat) is a statement:
"TAG NATIONAL COLLEGE QUEEN PAGEANT"
The car was purchased in Fort Myers by a lady who owned it for 26 years, then went up to Orlando for 3 years, then up to the Great White North of London Ontario Canada.
Hello I picked up the paperwork today and there was nothing about it being a prize car etc however the original build sheet says on the bottom "MEMO U1 142 PINK 86899466 SHIP UNCUT QUART OF ABOVE COLOR WITH UNIT". The PHS documents say it was an internally ordered car owned by Pontiac. The guy at PHS seemed extremely exited after reading the info and deciphering it for me. Don't know what any of this really means in the end other than a. some executive ordered it for his wife, b. it was a promotional car meaning ads and commercials etc, c. they built it for a prize for miss america or playboy etc, or c. some really rich person like Nancy Sinatra said they want this now. Nancy Sinatra has a site one can post on and someone posted that they heard she had pink Firebird convertible and wondered if she used to own the one he had which is possibly the one I currently have. Can't imagine there are to many cars exactly like mine. I also have what I believe is the phone number of Miss America in 1968. I'll give her a ring in a couple days and if I talk to her I'll find out for sure if they did give away Pink Firebirds to the 68 winner and runner up. I also read that the color was made to match Nancy Sinatra's lipstick which if true would explain why she might have a car this color.
Hello Bjorn, I also vaguely remember her with a pink car, pink sweater and pink lipstick in a commercial or poster ad or both. Do you remember the sweater as being really thick or fuzzy like a 60's shag carpet with big loop in it?
PS. Unfortunately everyone will know how ancient we are to be able to almost remember something from 68.
Hello Geoff, Thanks for taking the time and interest to post since as administrator I'm sure you have a lot of other things to do at 10:30 at night. Is it possible you still have the contact info for the guy that one one on the game show. If so, then possibly he has the build sheet, window sticker etc which might show how his particular car was labeled or one could get hte PHS which would might shed some light. This obviously might not be the same for all "PRIZE" cars etc but it would be interesting. Thanks

yes, big loop type sweater, maybe turtle neck? memory is getting weaker , but since I also had an album with Nancy ("these boots keep walking" or such)...I also could be mixing that pic up?
You probably spoke to Jim Mattison or possibly his son JB at PHS.
Word of caution and advice. DO NOT entertain the thought of selling the car no matter who comes knocking on your door whether it be a month or years down the road. Determining who once owned the car can be a fun process.

Wow! I remember as a little kid (8?) saying she was my favorite singer. Now I know why...

Hello Yes there are several videos of her and most other musicians and bands etc on you tube. You tube is unbelievably cool, I only recently went on it. Anyway I'll see if any of my friends know Nancy Sinatra and just have them ask her. I did contact Pontiac archives directly today and they knew nothing about it. They said thay had no records that far back. Don't know what they are archiving there then. I will post what ever I find out in my search and thanks for all the input and interest.
This video below is totally off topic so please excuse or delete it if you don't want it on this string. The person singing sang several of the James Bond songs and there were probably a few Pontiacs in some of those movies too. I'm looking into that also just for fun. She's no Beyonce or Nancy Sinatra but she's still pretty toasty for old school.
Here is a post from someone on the nancysinatra.com site from 2008. Someone else is also obviously trying to chase down a connection. This may be his car. Can't imagine there are too many like it running around.
Personally I think Jessica Simpson's version of "Boots" is a million times better than Nancy's version. Well, I am referring to the video and not the audio anyway...
Hello Just found this. I'm sure most of you have seen it already. I am trying to chase down the original interview with John Middleborook done by automotive news they are referring to. If anyone knows how to do that please let me know. If I speak to Miss America 1968 and says they didn't give her a Pontiac in 68 then this is most likely the missing Nancy Sinatra car or Pontiac/Sinatra promocar.
Hello Just found the original ad online but would love to have the original ad. I guess I will call them and see if I can get an archive copy. Man, I love the internet.

hmmm, to me that like saying "later years Firebird is lots better than the fgf" it may be technically etc, but......lol...I always like the "original" , song , movie , car...
I also prefer the original " Thomas Crown affair" etc...
"boots" to me should be sung by Nancy , no matter if anyone does it better later....its just "how it is"....LOL

never knew that firebird had a pink color . i have known that mustangs 65, 66 convertibles (playmate special), and 67 mustang convertibles (playboy special) even a 65 fastback mustang that is a local car that is factory pink. pink birds now that is rare, and interesting.
Hello Wouter; My post is off topic. I have never seen one of those and I watch a lot of wildlife shows. What is it called? It looks a bit like our pink flamingos. The most important question is what do they taste like?
Hello Bird of Fire 69. You mentioned you saw an original 65 pink mustang fastback. How did you determine that it was original? I actually know a lot about mustangs and very little about firebirds. No Mustang person I know has ever seen one and we are all old enough to be around when they came out however this also means we are all old enough to not remember the 60's so well etc. If it was pink then the door tag would not have a paint code and the DSO would have 7 digits instead of the usual two which indicates a special order car. I would be very interested in buying the car. If it's not for sale I would still be interested in talking to the owner to get some history and possibly make him an offer he can't refuse. If that doesn't work then I can get the car in a Magazine article if I can prove it was a factory pink car if he wants. Thanks
I see it at a local cruise in (40 miles ) distance. that runs from april thru oct. saturday weekends. I have talked to the lady that owns it. She said she bought it a few years back from a woman from Maryland that special ordered it that color from the factory.when i run into the car again next spring i will try to get some info for you. did not look at vin. or body tag just what the owner told me. when i first seen it i thought of (playboy special). later learned all of those were convertibles. the car is in nice shape .
