transverse muffler

I have a 1968 firebird I have installed the exaust, and then put the gas tank in. the tranverse muffler from the front of the tank do you know what the distance between them is?I think I am to close

Yeah, there isn't much room between the gas tank and the rear end cover. Same with 2nd gens. I don't know what the distance is supposed to be but both of mine are within about 2-3 inches and I haven't had any problems.

I have about 1 inch between the tank and muffler.You can run your hand between them and that is about it.

I've owned 1st and 2nd gens and haven't seen a heat shield yet. And, yes the tank and muffler are very close.
