For those of you that remember me, I bought the '69 vert and picked it up last Wednesday (6/30/04).
Now I have a problem that I new about before I bought the car but I thought that we had fixed it. The car is originally a 350 HO that now is a 400 w/auto trans. When I went to look at the car it wouldn't start because the guys who looked at it the night before had turned the column on the steering wheel and then the car wouldn't start. When we got there we messed around with the column, fuses, etc because when you turned the key there was nothing, no click or anything. It was like the car was not in park. We ended up turning the column on the steering wheel all the way to the left where the key would go back to the lock postion and putting it in nuetral to push it the rest of the way into this guys garage. When we put it back into park it fired right up.
It started with no problems for about a day after I got it home, but now it's right back to where it was the day I looked at it and no matter what we try, it won't start.
I have the same problem some times...my linkage is missing between the col shifter part and the console shifter....these cars while having a console shifter , still shift via the column...the 'american easy way' to change from col. to floor shift...anyway , the neutral switch is in there , you got to turn the col cover all the way to the left to make contact...sometimes it will turn back as you drive , mine did...I put a screw in mine to hold it it place , but it still moves some at times , just a 1/32" or so, you may have a bad neutral switch too, maybe that little end is cracking , its like a plastic piece about the size of the end of a match stick... I also moved my neutral switch to a hidden location to be used as a 'kill switch' ( a wiggle switch) that you hold while cranking....only thing to remember ,it can start in ANY gear... Sounds like its the neutral switch or the col. cover that just is some off....
Try this. Open the hood, look at the column where it comes through the firewall. You should see a flat lever pointing toward the engine. This is the part of the linkage that connects to the shifter lever on the trans. Pull the lever all the way up until it stops. Now try to turn the key. Mine still does it from time to time as I am missing the linkage between the steering column and the shift lever on the side of the trans.
