I was trying to decide what to do with the cracked steering wheel in my '69, when I noticed that every '69 steering wheel I've seen in other '69s so far have 3 spokes... Is mine a 2 spoke because it's a deluxe interior? I'm pretty sure it's the original wheel, so now I'm baffled. Can someone shed some light on this for me? The car is odd enough being a factory two toned burgundy top, with cameo white bottom, and now this... I searched through the topics on here, and didn't see anything about this exact subject. If it's been discussed, can somone point me to the thread?
I believe the two spoke you have is the standard, the 3 spoke is the deluxe.
Look up your interior codes on your cowl and see if you have the deluxe interior group. I think some of the other elements include the chrome striping around the pedals too.
If Im wrong, someone correct me.. but I think thats the story...
Have you found the build sheet by any chance, that will tell you what wheel came on the car. I'm assuming you will pull the carpet out...there may be one there and also look in the passenger seat.
I have a 69 Standard interior. Has the 2-spoke wheel. I don't have the PHS, but the interior is original. I would have to assume so is the steering wheel.
Haven't found the build sheet yet. The seats were reupholstered in red cloth back in the 80s, so if it was under the seat, it's long gone. Already dropped the tank looking for it as well. Looked in the wheel wells, and kick panels too. Maybe it's under the carpet. That would be great if it were.
I ordered PHS documentation when I bought the car, so tonight I decided to look at it just to see if I could answer my own question, before checking back with everyone here. From what I discovered on the PHS docs, I'm pretty sure I did.
I already knew I had a custom interior from the cowl tag, and the PHS docs (214 Red Knit Vinyl). I just noticed tonight that the PHS doc says STG WHL-TILT code 304. So, I'm guessing STG WHL means standard steering wheel. My thinking wasn't exactly backwards, because I figured it would have been a 3 spoke wheel, since the interior was custom, and all the custom interiors I had seen so far in '69s all had 3 spoke wheels. That's why I was wondering if in fact the 2 spoke wheel was custom, and not standard, because why would someone order a custom interior, with tilt steering and not order a nice 3 spoke steering wheel as well?
Apparently someone must have liked the 2 spoke wheel much better than the 3, because my '69 was ordered with a custom interior, and a standard 2 spoke. This car gets more unique everyday... I'm wondering what else I'll find as the tear down continues.
In the mean time, anyone got a red standard 2 spoke wheel that's not cracked they wanna sell?
You are right. That is the std wheel. Most of the cars came with the 3 spoke 'deluxe' wheel. I never owned a bird with a 2 spke wheel as I mentioned. I would restore that one using that wheel guy, or I would buy a wood repop from Ames, they are nice looking jobbies. My 69 GTO original deluxe wheel is in my basement, almost as nice as new, since back in 1987 I replaced it with a wood (fake wood as we all know) wheel and drive it to this day with the wood wheel. There are many nice black wheels out there, but when you start trying to get the colored ones, rarity catches up with the restorer. It is really hard to get a colored wheel in great shape of ANY type from that era. I myself need a 67-68 turquoise wheel for a 68 GTO I own. Lotsa luck to you and me.
1969 Firebird 350 Coupe, Rust free Texas body, formerly brown, now a TA clone with quality spoiler, latching hood and TA wheel; 1969 GTO Convertible Expresso Brown/Parchment(currently painted red). Both numbers matching. My first love was a Cameo White 67 326 Coupe, bought back in 1983, at the age of 17, for $1,200. Been hooked since on PONTIAC! Working on a 67 400 ragtop for customization-Gulf Turquoise/Parchment/400/4 spd! My winter project!
