I have a 1968 Firebird 350 convertible and I am thinking about getting the engine rebuilt I have a budget of $4,500 to $5,500. My question is how much it typically costs to rebuild an engine and if I am going to restore the car is this a good first project. I am going to take the car to a local (I live in Pittsburgh) guy who rebuilds engine and he said the range is between $4,500 and $7,500 depending on how custom the job is. Any insight or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

i spent 3k and i assembled it. you can get a heck of an engine out of that budget. shop around a little more.

I had mine done for $2,350, stock, by a local shop that specializes in Pontiac V8's but does others. Very pleased with the results.

That engine builders price seems high. A stock rebuild should not cost that much. A hi-po rebuild can cost an arm and a leg..

Thanks for everyones comments I called another shop and got an estimate of $2,500. At that price I think I will also have enough for a new header, exhaust and I will convert the car to disc brakes.

I was thinking of doing my 350 this fall and was quoted $2500 - $3300. That included a block repaint.
