I have a set of Hedman Headers on my 400 right now. The problem is you cannot remove the oil filter without dropping the pasenger side header. Does anyone use a remote oil filter with it relocated somewhere else? Or is there another way around this problem?
One way is to get expensive headers that have the clearance.
I have read about all sorts of problems with header fit on our 1st Gens and decided to go with Dougs Headers. They run about $700 with ceramic coating.

Sorry no pictures as I don't have them installed yet (and either is the engine )

I have the Headman 4 tubes on my 69. The FRAM PH25 filter is the only one that will fit. It's tight, but you don't have to remove the headers. I know everyone says not to use FRAM, but I haven't had an issue yet. (knock on wood). That would be a very cheap alternative.
I'm running the very cheap, but good, Blackjack/Dynamax headers (WLK-85030) through Summit Racing. There is a lot of clearance around the oil filter and the starter. If you are running a 4-spd I don't think these will work. The only drawback is one of the driver's side primary tubes sits pretty low (to clear steering box) and can rub pretty easy. Also the paint on these headers is a joke. It will flake off within weeks of use. Other than that I would highly recommend them and they are only about $130.
I'm using a WIX filter and have headers on my 455 in my 69. I usually put plastic over the headers, unscrew the filter from below the car and then set it on top the the headers, crawl out from under car and reach in from the top to remove the filter. Smooth firewall with no heater or AC box, though.
I have the same black jack headers. They show up on e-bay regularly for about $60. I believe PY sells them for about the same price.
The paint is only to prevent rust during shipping and storage. It needs to be stripped off and repainted with hi-temp paint. I did it and my hi-temp paint job failed as well.
paraphrased
quote:
Fram features cardboard end caps for the filter element that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals against the cardboard and frequently leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak. The stamped-metal threaded end is weakly constructed and it has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow. The filter element can collapse causing bits of filter and glue to circulate through the system, blocking oil passages.
Penzoil & Quaker State filters are also made by Fram. Penzoil was Purolater, but is now Fram, and can be found at K-Mart

as far as how this compares to other filters, or how true it is, i don't know. i have used them. i've heard some dealers wont cover warranties if a fram is used.
i use ac delco. they are usually a little smaller diameter. (very important on some cars) wix and purolater are supposed to be good. NAPA is wix, i think. it probably doesn't matter that much if you change every 3 months.
i put a filter relocation on a miata, and my bro has one on his 68 mustang FE. i've changed oil on several cars which had them aftermarket or factory installed. i think they're cool, and make changing the oil filter a lot easier, as well as provide a bit of extra cooling.
Thanks for all the input. I might take my chances in the shortrun with that FRAM filter. I think I will eventually get the remote oil filter though. We will see what happens.
I used a set of the same headers you are using, buy an oil filter adapter kit from Ames or Performance years. This kit will tilt your oil filter backwards so it will clear the bottom of the header with no problems getting the filter off. It was used on all '67-9 F-body & '64-9 big cars using long branch manifolds.
i have hooker headers on my 326, and i can still change the oil without a problem, the headers are black so it doesn't matter if a little bit of oil gets on them, it will just burn off. only that you have to remove the oil filter unit if you were to remove the headers or install them, but that's on a 326 not your 400.
