i've got a 67 bird with a stock 326 the rear gears are 3.08 and the trans is a super turbine 300 2 speed (not a powerglide). its all original but i'm finally giving up...it needs more gears. with your foot to the floor...its single shift at 70mph is just boring and the average 305 camaro passes me with ease. i'm wondering if the 200r4 or 700r4 with the adapter is the easist swap? as far as modifications and parts to buy?
I went from the 3spd automatic to a t-5 5 spd and just love it. Except for shortening the drive shaft and having to put in a clucth and the clutch linkage It is the same as changing an auto trans. With your 3.08's and a .63 overdrive you would probably be turning 2000 rpm @70-75 mph. If you have a console that would also have to be changed, and the manual ones can be hard to find. Still worth it in my mind.
thanks, but i've had this car for a looooong time and it pains me to swap out any part of its originality.....i've got the parts to go standard laying around....but it just doesn't feel right.
I struggled with the originality thing as well, so I kept all of the original parts and if, when my kids sell my car, the new buyer wants it to be the column shift automatic that the PHS shows they can convert it back. I, on the other hand, will be loving my 5 speed cruiser for a long time to come.
I too recently did a 4-speed swap on my 67 LeMans with only 54k miles. I dorve the car for a couple of months with the 326, 2-speed auto, 2.56 open rear. I too was reluctant to do the 4-speed conv. However, having only 2 speeds, slow and slower became old really quick!
So, I made the change and I am glad I did. That little 326 is a whole new car now! If we keep the car it will get a 3.55 posi rear next.
As for originality, if you keep the old original parts, how can it possibly be a bad thing to a new potential owner? Also, be sure to use OEM/correct parts vs. a 4-speed conv. hack job which I have seen plenty of. Now that will definately have negative impact down the road if you go to sell the car. It's about the same as hacking up a dash and installing some horrendous looking radio etc. A hack job that will later come back to haunt the person who did it etc....
