I was at our local car show last weekend and was running around with a 1969 licence plate on the car. I had the current plate under my floor mat in case I was pulled over....
Anyway, a guy told me at the show that you could actually register these vintage plates and drive with them on! I thought that would really be cool, so I inquired with the vehicle registration office today to see if this was true.
Yes, (in Alberta) you can register your vintage plate from 1967, 68, 69, etc. and drive with them on your car permanently "IF" the plates were ORIGINALLY registered to you. Kind of like re-registering them 40+ years later! Unfortunatley, this isn't the case for me.
Are there any States or Provinces where this is allowed? Anyone running vintage plates on their cars??
In Minnesota we can drive with vintage plates (from anywhere) if it is to or from a car show.
(So I go to lots of car shows.)
Actually, I now run collector plates on mine, but if I wanted to switch, I could. Most shows I have attended run 80% collector car plates, and 20% vintage.
The drawback with vintage (from Minnesota) was that they used to have three year plates. So my '68 plates are stamped 1968, but for '67, you would have a 1965 plate with a red 1967 sticker. So I didn't much care for that.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. in most US states you can register with YOM plates, = plates for Year Of Manufacture.....they dont have to be yours, since they are obviously expired. You can buy them on EBay ,antique stores etc., then you get them approved by DMV.
I have 69`s on my 69 bird, 71 s on my 71 Triumph , had 57s on my 57 Studebaker (since sold)

We have that now in Alberta, but back then each year was a different plate.

I bought mine this way, but I guess I can't get them approved / re-registered.
We can do it in Michigan also. We have a 68 plate for the bird. Gonna have to find something to put on the front since it now has a new valance with plate holder. Any suggtions for a front plate?

Leave itto the govt to have a dumb [censored] rule like that.
However, I think you can put the vintage plate on the front of the car.
Ooh wait a minute ... got a better idea.
Go back to registries (AMA, they can think while standing) and tell them you were the original owner of the plates. They have no way to confirm it as the records date back to the early eighties. It just a standard question they ask and has more to do with current plates

Id love to have a differnt plate on my car. The WisCONsin collector plate is a ghastly light blue with red characters that doesn't match almost any paint job (except maybe sky blue and red).

That's a good idea! The only issue is in 1969 I wouldn't have been old enough to have registered them (barely). Geeez, first time I've felt "young" in a long time!
You can register old plates here in FL I beleive as well as NY. I just looked into personalized plate for the LeMans as the one we had on the Bird won't go well (MEAN BRD). LOL If we are able to keep the LeMans and not have to sell her, the plate I'd get would be NO GOAT. And it's available too!
Virginia has a program similar to what you describe. Year of Make plates can be registered for a one time $50 fee. Found a NOS set on ebay(still in the DMV wrapper). They look great.
if i can find them i still have my nevada plates, there slightly expired by around 35-40 years but they are regestered to the car... i might just run them, atleast they can get me on switched tags
One of the guys I work with runs a set on his 71 T-37. He told me it was legal.
From the Illinois Secretary of state website.
Historical License Plates, representing the model year, may be displayed on an antique vehicle, provided the owner has valid, current Antique Vehicle Plates. Plates and registration must be kept in the vehicle at all times.
