Hello all... Well, my 68 convertible has been painted, and I'm in the process of reassembly. Unfortunately, I was not the disassembly person, so I'm learning much as I go. Are there any tricks to reinstalling the windshield glass? How do I locate windshield glass within the frame? What about alignment with chrome moldings, sealant, etc.?
I assume also 68 is same as 69,(mine is 69..) there should be two small L shaped clips at ea end at bottom of opening to set glass on....they screw onto frame w one screw ea. If I remember right about 6" or so in from the end.
This was covered at length awhile back...maybe someone remember by whom or where... I`ll do this from memory ,since I did my w/s two yrs ago... Assuming you have the glass, there are a few different adhesives , tape and butyl type caulk...(gorilla snot! which I used) after you get the frame really clean , you practice setting the glass a couple of times (dry) so you get the feel for it... best is w two people ,one ea side of the car,lay the w/s on a blanket or towel on the hood, bring one arm thru the w/s frame opening, grab the w/s w one hand of ea side of the glass, bring it into position....practice to get it perfect ea time so you wont have to move it once its in the frame....then clean the frame once more, stick the gorilla snot on there w a caulking gun, set the w/s in place , press on it slightly to 'set' it.....re-install the trim...if you drive the var fairly soon, dont hit the brakes too hard! it may come out! best bet is to let it 'set' for a couple of hrs first...over night for instance
Nope... No glass in now.. Just painted and reassembly started.
Why gorilla snot .vs. the 3/8 rope-type stuff?
Also, I don't believe that I have screw holes for the bottom brackets the you describe. I've installed a new upper dash panel, and I'm pretty sure it's "hole-less".
The gorilla snot holds better. You'll see that if you put the w/s in crooked and have to straighten it. Oh yeah, one more thing ... LEAVE THE BEER IN THE REFRIGERATOR UNTIL THE JOB IS FINISHED!
Thanks Scott, I KNEW somebody would know, and I already knew you are a "somebody" , not a nobody....
and yes , the snot holds better....my friend who helped me has installed MANY windshields professionally, so I took his advise...we used 1 and a 1/4 tube of it...close to $20 for the two... why you`re always 'some' short, who knows...1 tube should work! lol
A couple of other things to think about is there is a primer to use on the glass before you use the caulking. I would tape off the inside edge line of the primer so you get a nice straight line and try to put a nice, even, straight bead of caulking on the channel because you'll be able to see it through the windshield from the outside when you finish.
where did you find the upper dash panel ? mine is rusted away below the windshield and i havent seen a replacement for it. thought i was gonna have to weld in some sheetmetal to replace.
Yeah... I'm pretty sure that I got mine from Classic Industries.. My sheet metal was shot in that area.. I even had to weld in some reinforcement metal along the front edge prior to installing the dash panel on top. I'm very happy with the results.. Looks as good as new.
