I know you guys talk about the factory cams. My question is this, what are the durations and lifts of the 67 68 grind cams. I am looking at what cam and springs I need to get the sound and performance I want. Thx Joe
Just because you have all the specs on paper don't think you'll be able to tell what the performance and sound will be like. If the cam doesn't match well with the rest of the parts it won't perform it's best and the sound has alot to do with your exhaust system and a little bit to do with the cam. I think best you could do is post your specs and maybe have everybody you know post theirs and a sound clip so you can hear it first person. Get some good ext speakers hooked up to your comp. I'll start: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gas0I47WerM 400 with Erson single pattern cam:230/230dur. .510 lift(w/1.65) 110LSA Longbranch mans/2.5in pipes w/x-pipe/UltaFlow Welded and dumps
I am putting a 68 400 motor together. I have 68-#16 heads that I am in the process of setting up. The car has a richmond 4spd and posi carrier not sure of gear ratio. Reason I ask about the cam specs is I don't know what the factory grinds were. I know some have mentioned using such cams but I want something with a noticable lope. I want to compare the lift and duration of factory and aftermarket to pick the best cam for my application.
I don't think you'll find a factory grind with a noticible lope unless you go with a RA solid grind. Most of the factory cams were ground for the consumer and therefore made to be fairly mild and comfortable to drive for the general public. You'll have to go out of the box to find one with that hot rod sound.
Thx Mike, exactly what I was looking for. I was thinking about something close to the 68 grind but slightly more aggressive. I am going to talk to my machine shop about lowering the compression to make my engine a little pump gas friendly.
The Summit 2801 is the high lift version on the 068. Similar durations, but much more valve lift and a tighter lobe separation. Would provide more lope than the 068, but still very street friendly in a 400.
I have the Summit 2801 in my yellow 'bird. It's an auto, and it's a very easy to drive cam. The exhaust, which is a replica of factory, gives a very throaty idle and nice cruise sound.
We put an Isky cam with similar specs to the 2801/2802 in the '68 400, with a Gardner exhaust, and it sounds a bit lopier, and even more throaty with the long branch manifolds. It growls.
