My 68 400 has had the engine block replaced by the previous owner with a later model block. It now has the 11-bolt water pump/timing cover on it. Does the 8-bolt water pump/timing cover bolt up? If so, do I want the 8-bolt water pump system? Is there a reason this was changed in 69? I would like the engine to at least look correct. I discovered this when I ordered the alt brackets for a 68 and the front one didn't fit right because of the water pump bolt configuration. Thanks, Gary
An 8 bolt pump will not work with a 69 and later timing cover. I'd change out the cover to 68 if you want correct apprerances. Besides adding a few more bolts to the cover in 69 they changed the dividers inside the pumps from 68 to 69.
And they changed the brackets and the pulleys as well. Use what matches the rest of your accessories unless you intend to hunt down a lot of difficult parts.
I swapped out my 8 bolt for the more common 11 bolt. All you need is a 69,70 waterpump pulley and a 69 alternator strap. On the PY site there is huge long post on belt squel that has the pulley part numbers needed. Its at the end where I posted.
I appreciate all the input. I think I've pretty much resigned to keeping it like it is and just getting the correct alt strap. Already ordered it, but I may change it over in the future if I want it to look more "correct".
One thing to keep in mind is that they have an early '69 pump and a '69.5 and up pump.
The early is 4 & 3/32" from the snout to the top of the pump. The late one is 4 & 9/32" from the snout to the top of the pump. I don't know which pulley/component causes the problem but you'll have an alignment issue if you try to mix long-short snout pumps.
