G'day from Australia I am in the process of restoring my 68 firebird coupe and i want to replace the cam in my 400 as i don't know what grind it is. I will only be using the car as a cruizer,no burnouts or drag racing in mind. The car is fitted with a/c,p/s,2.56 rear end, fitted with an edelbrock performer rpm manifold and a 4 barrel holley carb. Std heads and valves Car is auto T350. What do you guys recommend? Thanx in advance Chris
Are you planning on keeping that rear gear? Is the torque converter stock? What is the compression ratio? All of these play huge factors.
The way your setup is now (assuming factory compression and stock converter) you'd want a split pattern with intake duration @ .50 in the range of 202-208 and a 112 degrees lobe separation.
So Summitracing.com 2800 grind, Lunati 07-UH6-UH3-12 or Crower 60239 would be good choices. These might seem mild to some people, but will make the car very responsive on the street with your combo. A Crower 60240 might also work if you advance it 2 degrees. Make sure you check your valve clearance.
What about in the Comp Cam range, being overseas freight is a killer,i have to buy most of my parts from Classics it just makes it easier as i am buying other parts to combine . Not sure if i will replace the rear gears, are they good for cruizing? Std converter, not sure of compression ratio,i bought the engine separately from the car,the heads are off so i can check size of valves, bores etc... Whats the std size of the bores? Thanx Chris
