I get quite a bit of white smoke when I'm driving. It's either burning antifreeze or tranny fluid in the combustion chamber. I think I've got this one figured out after much google'ing. First, I am losing tranny fluid (but not leaking it). Also the smoke doesn't smell like antifreeze. I've determined that the transmission (TH 350) modultator diaphragm is bad, which will cause it suck tranny fluid up into the chamber. Anyway, my question is, where is the modulator? Is it on the tranny or under the hood somewhere?
Found it! Thanks! While I was under there, I decided to try to see my VIN and check all the other codes. I know it's the original engine (unless it was a service replacement I'm not aware of), but just wanted to check. I can't find the VIN. Do I need to remove the hose from the water pump to get at it? Or is it on the other side of the block? Also I'm confused about the relation between the engine unit number and my protect-o-plate. The engine code is YE, engine unit # 0848165. My protect-o-plate looks like this: 223679n116130 01-30-70 02303 A1 4
then Grandpa's old address.
I thought the E.U.N was supposed to be on the protect-o-plate. Any ideas? 69 conv, 350 2bbl.
I found this flat area and figured this should be the location, but couldn't see a stamp. It probably is there but light. Your pics helped a great deal, thank you. It looks like the VIN is stamped vertically, right?
I'm pretty sure I got my smoke problem fixed, I'll know for sure when I take it for a spin tonight.
Well this weekend I to have that problem. But mine is more from the tire area. Possibly from the TCI Streetfighter 32-38hundred stall converter I put in. Well I quess i'll need new skins this spring! Hope you find that leak!!!!!! Sure can be a pain. Atleast you've got all winter to fix. Good luck.
I was just going to say to Dave, that he better double check to see where the "White Smoke" is coming from. More often than not in these older muscle cars, you will see a fair amount of white smoke coming out the rear of the car... and while this can be alarming to most who are unfamiliar with this... in most cases, it's actually smoke caused by excessive rapid tire wear.
Usually you will notice this most often as you pull away from a stop light, or if there happens to be another muscle car (or heavily stickered import) in the lane next to you and you are compelled to get away from said offending car... you look back and see a cloud of white smoke... and then notice the "other" car immerging from this cloud.
This is actually quite normal, and usually nothing to worry about unless you also see flashing red lights immerging from this cloud. Then... Houston, we have a Problem!
Just thought I'd make sure this was not the case here... didn't want you chasing down problems if it was a normal condition!
Install Drag radials.....will reduce the number of revolutions the tire slips before grabbing under hard acceleration and will increase the permagrin on your face when they hook. Should be able to get atleast 3000 miles out of them.
I was at a local car show and there was a guy braging about getting 100,000 miles out of a set of tires. He said that he bought the cheapest tires that Discount Tires sells and still got 100,000 miles out of them. He opened the hood to show off his 400. Chevy 400
Big Joe, you mean that special "small block" 400 chevy engine??? Yeah, I've had a few fellas show me that "unique" block. Some guys are so good at talking it they actually beleive it, and its oh so hard to call their bluff in public, you know?
