Hi everyone, I am looking to add a wood steering wheel to my bird and am having some trouble..... I know this has been talked about before but I couldnt find it i the search so I apologize for the repetition.
First off...Has anyone put in the Grant wood steering wheel. Its a third of the price. If so how does it look. Is it the same size as the original wood steering wheel or same in size as the black steering wheel I had in my car originally.
Are there any other options in steering wheels I should be looking at.
I went with the Grant wheel and really like it. It's pretty close to the original wheel in diameter.

So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. you can buy an original but the repro (got mine at CI but sold elsewhere) wheel looks just as nice. The collar sold with the CI bundle is garbage though. Still looking for a nice cast metal piece.

Got mine from Ebay too. It has some ware and pitting in the steel but I still like it. I think I paid $300 but it was before the after market wheel came out.
1967 firebird A.I.R. 400 or California-emissions Firebird 400 four-speed hardtop. It also came with dual factory traction bars or safe-T- track rear axle, 10 bolt posi, front power disc brakes, PS, a Muncie 4 speed, Console, Dual exhaust, dual horns, and Soft Ray Glass windshield. Red on Red car... and a hood tach, rally gauge cluster... Maybe for sale??? Its sitting in MO and I am now in CA. Anyone want to haul it my way? PM me.
1220 of them were “(WU)” 400 A.I.R. 4 barrel manual transmissions. (Engine codes in parenthesis are for cars built with AIR Injector Exhaust Control, code 616. This was an emissions reduction modification performed on the heads. They were cast with an air injection passage to reduce emissions. They were installed on Firebirds manufactured for sale in California only).
It has a 24 339 code for the dealer on it from PHS... It was from Peninsula Pontiac, 2909 Pacific Coast Highway, Torrence, CA 90505

I just bought a nos custom sport simulated wood steering wheel. The color of the simulated wood looks like it's gray in color. How do you suggest I replicate/refinish the wood grain color? What materials would I use? Thanks!

Mine looks like chestnut color walnut, so can't help with that. I have heard wood gel stains made for fiberglass work well, but you'd have to topcoat it.

Anyone have one for a '68 that they want to sell? No one I've spoken to seems to know when they are coming in.

Classic is out of stock. Are the wheels the same for the Firebird and the GTO? OPGI has them in stock but wants $150 more for them than anyone else.

I'm in the process of painting a simulated wood steering wheel and want to know the correct color that was used on the custom sport steering wheel. I have seen very light to dark colors. Is there a correct color for the first generation firebirds? Thanks!

Found the last one at Firebirdcentral. It's already on its way.

I'm restoring an original custom sport steering wheel for my 67 Firebird. Since my car is Gold with a Greenish tint, I went with the lighter Brown/Tan color.
I need your opinion on how to finish the restoration. I painted it to look as if it has a woodgrain finish (see enclosed pictures). Should I finish it with the satin clearcoat OR sand it down so it's smooth, then appy the satin clearcoat. Any other suggestions are welcome. The quality of the pictures isn't great, so you can't see alot of the grainy texture and imperfections! Much appreciated thanks!

I'm in the process of installing my restored custom-sport steering wheel. I just took the Grant steering wheel off and this is what I see. Does this part need to come off or mount the steering wheel on top of this? Thanks!

yes, some where there is a photo set of the parts needed. you need the plastic collar along with the horn contact parts and cap. should be a satin finish also.
