Looks like Edelbrock will be releasing a new fuel injection system for the 326-455 (excluding 301) engine line. The Victor EFI System (P/N 3658) includes everything and is based on the Torker II intake manifold. It's good for up to 400-600 HP. Edelbrock reassured me that the Victor EFI (Torker II based manifold) system would work well on a mild Pontiac engine also. It's good from 0-6500 RPM.
Now for the jaded out there (you know who you are) they have the Super Victor EFI System (P/N 3657) which is good for up to 500-750 HP and 7500 RPM. This system IS based on the race Victor manifold.
I had looked at this before - I think it was advertised in one of the Pontiac mags. Looks pretty cool. How did the price come in? I think EFI is great for a resto mod if it's affordable.
The Edelbrock rep didn't give me a price but said it will be available in mid-Spring timeframe. My guess, it will be about $2000-2200 complete. About what all the "other" EFI units go for. Summit Racing sells the Chevy 350 version of this setup for $2079 and it goes for $2700 on the AMC/Jeep V-8's.
If the AMC system is going for $2700, the Pontiac will go for at least that. Edelbrock sells way more AMC stuff to the Jeep guys then they sell to us Pontiacers. Still, I think they're on to something with the complete system. I'm in the process of adding the Accel DFI Gen VII SEFI/UEGO system to my car. In fact, I finished the programming and intake plumbing tonight.
Man those things are expensive. Love to have one if I could swing it. All the cost is wraped up in the throttle body and the injectors. I looked at this stuff alot and there is a good forum on the megasquirt web page on building your own system for way way less if you know how to shop. Car Craft put the megasquirt system on a 350 and gave advice on how to do it cheaper then they did. They mentioned certain throtle bodies that you could take of some trucks and using the quad 4 injectors and having them rebuilt. I wonder if the Edelbrock system is a batch fire and if it controls the spark or not. I wish someone would make a tune port type manifold for them.
The base Victor EFI system is batch fire and requires PROM burning via Edelbrock.
I think that if someone was willing to study it enough, an EFI system off of a 4th gen F-body could be mated with one of Edelbrock's EFI manifolds with an elbow adaptor for the F-body throttle body. In fact, I spoke to someone at Summit Racing who is trying to adapt a Mustang 5.0 system to a Pontiac. This route requires a $350 dollar tool, software and probably a stand alone wideband 02 sensor for tuning.
The Edelbrock is the only Multi-Port Injection (MPI) system, which has a injector for each cylinder. The Holley, and the other units, are a Throttle-Bottle Injection (TBI). Which has 4 (I think) injectors in the main throttle body. It works somewhat like a carb, where as the MPI throttle body is only used as an air intake and doesn't have fuel flowing through it (unlike the TBI). The MPI injects the mixture right before the head on the intake manifold side. The TBI injects the fuel through the throttle body.
YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF BUYING A NEWER FIREBIRD IF YOU WANT ALL THAT.IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO BUY A NEW ONE AND WRAP REPO 1ST GEN PARTS AROUND IT TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE ONE.I LIKE MINE THE WAY THEY WERE MADE
I bet you 2 have blinking 12:00 on your VCR:) I would love to cruise down the road with laptop and tune my ride, I guess that shows what a geek I am. I love power and FI is the first step in makeing some really big numbers if you were add a ATI super charger or Turbo set up. Oh! Here I go dreaming again.
