I am trying to find an aftermarket ac kit for my 69 firebird. Most of the companys dont have a kit for the 69.Any sugestions on what you guys have done in your cars would help. Thanks
Just found a unit from vintage air yesterday that will fit with very little modification. As I found out if your car never had an AC unit then the firewall is different! I am trying to see if anyone here has tried it. Here is the link to the instruction manual. If I get some positive feedback I will order next week.
No feedback??? I wnet over the instructions and it seems not to bad, comes with just about everything and you dont need to buy the AC control unit for a firebird, works with the standard one in the car.
Did not like the look of the center vent, looks like it came out of a 71 Pinto. i am going to try to adapt the factory center to fit with it so that part at least looks factory. Going to finally place the order tomorrow, we shall see. While doing it I will probably get the overpriced "quite Ride" firewall insulation panel (overpriced from classic at $151.00) but eventually I plan to put in headers and this will better isolate the engine compartment as I already have Dynamatted the doors and floor.

I decided to go with the vintage air gen 4 kit for a 69 camero with factory air and get the under dash controles,The gen 4 kit doesen't use any cables so the factory controles won't work
Thanks for the input. I am going to get the one that uses the factory controls, they set the cables up with a micro switch but I will check on the gen 4 you mentioned. Is it installed yet? If so how well does it work?? Thanks!!

i installed the vintage air unit in my 69 vert back last winter,it was not that bad a job to do.it worked great all summer long.you will have to get a different crank pulley, seven blade fan, filler panels and the baffle pan to make sure it does not overheat.i have a few pics if anyone is interested.you can use the original heater control,it works fine.
I am working on this install as well in a 69 rag top car that had no a/c.The Vintage air kit seems to be put together well,I am at the point of drilling a 5/8 hole for the drain in the firewall.Would be great to see some pictures of the finished install, maybe a close up of the drain.I want to make sure I place this hole in the correct location.
I was in classic a few days ago and they have screens showing video of different installs. recently the Speed Channel, D&B and Classic did a 69 Camaro rebuild and they put the same vintage air unit in the Camaro, of courst they made it look easy. The only thing I did not like on the vintage air unit for the firbird is the center vent they give with it.

the center vent they use does suck because it is a little tricky to install.you have to take your time cutting out the dash for it,but in the end it looks great.here is a couple pics of how it looks installed.
I installed an older unit in my 69 that I bought from a friend who had it in his 68. There must be a slight change in case design because it was touch and go whether there was going to be enough room to run the ducts behind the radio and by the glove box insert. I tried to use the plastic liner they had but there is no way that was going to fit. It all eventually went in but it's tight. Still haven't charged it up yet because I need to get one hose remade. I used the original center vent as well because I didn't like the look of the one they included. I lost all my install pics when my HD crashed last year.
the hoses are tight, but they do fit and the glove box goes in and comes out (i have had to do that a couple times since ) pretty easy.there was a question about the drain hose and if you read the instructions it states were to drill the hole,i think it was just an inch below were the bottom of the firewall and the top of the floor pan meet.one other thing, make sure you hook-up the cables and the heater control before you install the unit, this makes it a lot easier later on.
