Well,my brother and i took over the family dairy farm from dad in 83,we built it up with our blood, sweat and tears ever since.built a state of the art new 120 stall barn two yrs ago, well today we listed it for sale .It was a hard decision but the timing is right and we are retiring(i'm, 49 and brother is 51). I just put an offer in on a 1.38acre retirement home for the wife and I and our cars.Built in a hardwood bush with a heated shop (30'x40') and one non insulated shed (23'x40') on a paved road(big must have as we live on a gravel road now and it's a [censored] to keep cars clean).1200 sq house.so we are scared & excited but are ready for the next step. My bother has lived in the farm house all his life and i have worked on the farm all my life,so it is a big step for us.
Just found out I'm out of a job next month. I've been working since I was 12. Never out of work 1 day. I'm 52 and still need to work for 15+ yrs. I'm in deep SH$#. Retiring at 49!!! Good for you! Enjoy. Your a lucky guy.
must have alot on my mind,I posted this in drivetrain and not rambling where i thought i put it.Bjorn feel free to move it. We live in a highly productive dairy area, plus we are in the top 10% in our county for production and management.Real estate agent says it will go fast.Land in our area is going for $14,000 an acre.
We have a dairy farm in Wisconsin that was settled in 1841 by my Great Great grandfather. I left farming in the 80's for corporate america but still own land. My uncle had a heart attack in the barn yard face down in you know what just a year before he was to retire, so now the cousins run it. I'd like to sell the land but will probably never happen because relatives still milk for a living. It's a hard life... good fo you to get out while your still young. I'll be 50 this year and retirment isnt even in sight for another 20 years.
I own farm land as well, and like most here (sorry Bjorn) I will turn 50 this summer as well. I don't farm any of my land, but I lease it out to a farmer down the road. He will be the third farmer in the past 14 years to lease our land. He's in his late 60's, and is about the last farmer in our immediate area, so I'm not sure which direction I'll go when that time comes.
I can see myself working for another 15+ years as well, but at least I own my own two businesses. Maybe some day I'll take a day or two vacation.
Good luck with the sale. Most farms in our area sell quite quickly as well.

Sounds great.....mildly jealous... 56 and I figure another 5 at least however if the mining/gas industry keeps up here as it is now I may be able to stash away some big sums the next few years and retire earlier. Never really retire tho, just chose what you do!

I've been off work for the last couple of months now(feels like retirement only with out the paycheck) because work slowed down and then the rains came. 53 this year. Figure I have about 6 or 7 more good years before I can do something else. Be nice to get out of the city and build hot rods for a "living" in the country. HEY, DON'T SQUASH THE DREAM, IT COULD HAPPEN.
Just spoke with 2 neighboring farmers ,both are interested and are calling the real estate agent. Thought we would give them first choice out of courtesy .
TOHCan, You're my hero if you can still afford to eat.
Not to brag or make anyone jealous, but in the summer I'm the car chief and sometimes also the crew chief for a local NASCAR team - and I get paid too!
