Where in Alaska if I canaskya? My wife and I spent 5 days in Seward and then 4 days in Little Mulchatna lodge last year. Pretty awesome catching salmon and trout before breakfast.
Where are ya headed? I spend considerable time in northern BC but did a great road trip some years back thru Whitehorse, Haines, Tok, Fairbanks, Circle,Mt. McKinley and so on. Beautiful!

We are doing a one week land excursion then a one week cruise. I'm not sure of all the details, but I'll be sure to post some pictures when I get back. I'm hoping to do a lot of fishing. I've yet I catch a halibut, and that happens to be on my bucket list. We shall see!
We caught and came home with 3 halibut from Seward in the 15-20 pound range. It's like fishing for grouper, bottom rig with a bait and lift on the hit. The barn door halibut seem to be near Montague island between Resuerrection bay and Seward and Prince William sound. Weather kept us from running there. You can only keep one Halibut per person except for the Seward and Homer fisheries. You think Florida has tough fishing regs, Alasaka's are even tougher, but deserved to keep the fisheries viable. Have fun!
15-20 or anything up to about 45 pounds are chickens, and good eating...halibut are all over the place, best around 100-200 feet... anything over that and one gets really pissed off when a rockfish takes the bait and you have to reel up and rebait....
Last one I caught was 46 lbs, my buddy pulled in one at 107lbs...or shall I say pulled ashore then loaded it in! Nice to have the rifle handy too so they don't break your leg flipping around....
