How do you read the metal transmission ID tags that are attached to the driver side of the case? Mine says 9792530 and it is attached to a Muncie M-20 with a date code stamp of P8K18 which I believe reads as July 17, 1967 (but built for the 1968 model year..I think I am reading that right).
I went to many resources online and did a search here, but have not come up with any information.
So a follow-up to my first email. I believe the Muncie Metal ID Tag is the part number of an M-20 specifically utilized in 1967 and 1968 on Firebirds based on some addition research I found: http://www.teufert.net/partbook/67-76/4-p.pdf. And with the date code stamp, it all seems to line up with my car.
However, there is NO VIN at all on this trans case and I see no evidence that one has ever been stamped on it. Has anyone else ever heard of the VIN never getting stamped into the case? There are no grind marks on the case and both the original owner (32 years) and the second owner (10 years) both swear the trans has never been out of the car. I have every receipt from this car, and there is nothing about a trans included in the paperwork.
I have a 1968 car...invoice date Nov 7, 1967. Trans seems to have been made in July 67 for the 68 model year (at least that is what I believe I am reading from the research I have done). Anyway, are you saying the VIN number should or should not be on this trans? I will have to take a look on the top of the case mounting flange for this EUN number. Are you saying that number should match the number on the engine?
I have a pic of a VIN on a #'s matching muncie from a '65 GTO that I almost bought. Sigh,,,,I still kick myself for not grabbing it. All #'s matching,, in pieces for very cheap.
Anyway it is on the top of the case right by the bellhousing. I Can not comment if yours is there, but this is where they were on a '65 GTO muncie.
Thanks for the feedback Dion. I swear...there is not one other number stamped in this trans except the date code stamp. Very strange. I will keep looking and can send pics of what I am seeing if anyone has interest. Still cannot figure out how to post pics here.
Would a service replacement have been installed before the customer got it? Then the VIN would not be there. It seems odd that a muncie in a '65 GTO would have it but not your firebird. Maybe the different assembly plants did stuff different.

Thats where it is on my 67, but smaller stamp...and mayby on RH side?... Gonna have to ck.
I was wondering the same thing Dion, but a service replacement from July 1967 for a '68 car just does not seem likely. I really wonder if the "stamper" was just lazy that day and missed a few? Since the date code would have been stamped on build day and the VIN on assembly day, it sure seems it could have been overlooked. All other casting numbers line up and the muncie tag is still on there. I have a signed letter from the original owner that the trans was never out of the car.
Was just wondering if any other original owners have ever seen this before? Just very strange.
My transmission has a date stamp of P8P21 (Sept 21, 1967.) Car was built Oct. 67. No VIN stamp on bottom or sides that I can see. Missing, on top, or replacement trans? Won't know until it comes out...
Are you planning to pull your trans? If so, report back on what you find on your Muncie trans. Another POCI source told me that the factory did not stamp VINs on manual trans cases.
