Hi everyone. I have a 72 nova subframe with all susp. components that I thought I was going to use on my damaged 68 fb. With all of this subframe talk going on I started looking more into what fits and what doesn't. Chevrolet parts interchange in google books page 75-"67-68 camaro type 1 will not fit 69 and newer camaro, pontiac firebird will not fit." It also says 69 camaro type 2 fits 69-72 nova, will fit 67-68 camaro with mods to control arm bumper and sway bar, will not fit pontiac firebird. Classic Musclecar 67-69 firebird restoration guide says "68 subframe will not properly line up with 69 and vice versa. Other than drilling for different motor mounts and the different control arm bump stop location, does anyone know why the nova subframe won't fit? Thanks for any help.
Motor mounts will not be an issue. Pontiac designed bolt-on brackets that correctly position Pontiac motors onto the Camaro/Nova/Firebird subframes. Also the subframe to body mount locations are all the same.
Yes, your 72 Nova subframe is only compatible with '69 or aftermarket control arms and possibly steering components.
So just make sure you ask for and use '69 suspension components from now on.
There sure is a bunch of you guys looking for '68 subframes at the moment. Too bad you couldn't organize a group buy

I've been comparing the 69 subframe to my 68 subframe. The only difference I see is the reinforced area for the bump stop is in the front instead of the rear. For each of my tapped holes going down the side of the frame, there now are a couple extra. I do not see in difference in sway bar or sterring mount locations.
Any aftermarket comports such as lower control arms are made to fit either the 68 or 69 frame. Sway bars are listed for all 3 years. Upper control arms does not matter.
I noticed they are selling new stock subframes in the catalogs now. I'm interested to hear some feedback on the quality, fitment, etc. Mine is pretty beat up and I think I might go that route if I decide to replace it.
You will be one of the first that I know that went for the repro frame. Let us know how it works out.

That pic in the CL ad looks like it has a straight idler arm. I was under the impression the straight ones were only for 6cyl and manual steer cars. He says quick ratio box so I assume it's a power box.
Do you guys think a 67 frame can be converted to a 68 frame? I want it to look exactly the same and use my 68 control arms. Can I just cut off the extra mounts on the 67?

The 67 frame would not have the thicker steel buildup area on the tower area to match up for the bumpers on the 68 control arms.
But a welder could cut off the heavier steel area on a 68 or 69 and move it to the rear location of the tower. That can be done.

I think your are right FireBob. You just never know what has been done to something over the course of 45 years.
We'll maybe it was from a 6 banger. He doesn't say but if it is the front springs aren't strong enough for a v8. I don't know but the sway bar might be smaller too. Still the frame should be the same.

I'm finding 68 Frames up here but they want $600 for them. I will pull my 67 out of the car trailer and put it up against my 68 so I can see the differences.

I finally pulled out my 67 frame. I put it down beside my old 68 coupe frame. All I could find was some holes missing (that I don't need) and some extra holes and some attachments not needed.
Here are the pics. What can you guys see that is different?

I posted a '68 Camaro subframe from the local CL a couple of days ago.
