Anyone have them and if so any trouble getting them on? I struggled for an hour then noticed the front holes for the J-bolts are 3-1/8" center to center and the rear holes are 4" center to center. I'm wondering if they are put together correctly. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks, Al
I think you may be trying to use the wrong holes. All four mounting holes look like they are the same spacing on the main plate. Not sure what the holes in the bracket with the 3 3/8 spacing is for. Maybe for the spring preload clamp but it's normally closer to the front where the bumper goes. I had a set on for years.
The bar sits under the spring in place of the stock spring-shock mount plate. Instead of two u-bolts there are two 1/2" bolts in the font two plate holes and a J-bolt in the rear two holes. The front of the J-bolts go through two holes further forward on the bar. Adjusting the front nuts on the J-bolts tunes the suspension for launch.
So as long as the two front J bolt holes are wider than the leaf spring you should be fine. Even if they are narrower than the bottom plate holes it shouldn't be a big deal. Looks like you need to feed the front J bolts into the bracket first and then the back ends into the bottom plate. You may have to "persuade" the back ones to go in a bit.
Hmm. Without seeing it...Seems like you should be able to cinch down the bolts to the housing by tightening the nuts. I know mine has that flat portion of the housing that is for the limiting bumper that has to be worked with/around.
so only the shoulders on the j bolts hold the axel bracket down? they just tighten upon the axel tube as the leaf spring wraps up? I guess as long as you trust the welds on your brackets to axel tube. I saw a back axel come loose in a 68 Camaro, it took out the floor, back seat, driveshaft, and fuel tank, gas everywhere. lucky no fire. I like real U-bolts now.
