I was quite smug after repairing my bent water pump pulley, until I put it on the pump and turned it. Wobble! I took it off and re-checked it , seemed close. I checked the pump flange and it's OK then I looked closer at the spacer I haven't really paid much attention to those before. Seems it may have been tightened down a tad tight, the bolt hole slots are narrower in the front than aft, anyone know if that is normal before I try to straighted it? I couldn't find one in the Ames catalogue, anyone know where I could buy a new one? Thanks
Never tried bending one before. I picked up an aftermarket spacer at Oriellys auto parts. Not sure if yours is stock or not, cant recall if the firebirds even came with a spacer, but you can pick spacers up at auto part stores.
Thanks for that. I had a bit of a brain malfunction. Every Pontiac I've owned from a 239 CID 1949 Silver Streak Torpedo back and 1953 Chieftain to my Catalina and 1969 GTO has had an engine driven fan. This is the first Firebird I've owned and the first car I've had with an electric fan. Usually the pulley attaches to the water pump and then the fan with or without a spacer between the pulley and the fan. My car has a spacer between the water pump and the pulley. I didn't think anything about it as the Water pump pulley aligns up with the crank pulley, alternator pulley and the power steering pulley. But I don't remember a spacer between the water pump and the pulley on any car or truck I've ever owned. Is this a Firebird unique thing, common, or is my set up something out of the ordinary? The pulley wont fit on the pump without interference unless the spacer is attached, and I can find no reference anywhere of a spacer between the water pump and the pulley. Any ideas as to what the **^&?
I agree , I have never seen a spacer between a water pump and the pulley. My guess would be that someone had to use a non-correct pulley and needed to use the spacer to get them to line up? just a guess mind you. that spacer definitely does not look good though. the stock water pump pulley already has a pretty good "backspacing" to it. with that spacer on it , yours must have a really big set back?does it look like the pulley you can see pretty clearly in one of these pics (farther down the page) http://www3.telus.net/68bird/engine_final.htm
Similar, mine is 2-7/8" from front to back. Stamped 9778559XP with an S 180 deg from that number. Crank pulley is 9790846YA with an S 180 deg from that number. Do you have a plate bolted on the front of your pulley or is that just the shape?
At first I thought you were talking about a spacer between the pulley and fan, but now I understand and I would have to agree with Medhat and that you might have a mix match of pulleys. I had the same problem when I first got my bird and found someone had put washers behind the pulley to push the pulley out towards the front of the car. After looking at the pulley I found out it was the wrong one. I would first look to see which pulley you should have here http://thefirstgensite.com/library/partscounter/illustrated/pullybelt/pullybelt1.html and find your exact year and the stock set up that your car came from the factory with. That link will give you the correct part number and as you will see there are a lot of combos that came in these firebird which makes it a pain in the rear. Once you find the correct PT #'s you can do a search by those to find them. CVF racing has a good spacer kit if you find you still need to have them http://www.cvfracing.com/Water-Pump-Pulley-Spacer-Kit-p/wp-spacer-kit.htm I run their pulley and bracket set up on mine and I found that my crank and WP pulley was off about a 16th or 8th and that kit has all the right sizes and combos that you might need and it fixed my alignment problem right up.
You're correct, the water pump pulley I have fits four different 1967 six cylinder OHC engines. My pulley should be 9786819. Anyone have one of those they are not using?
Well I found a correct number pulley in Quebec, bought it and had it shipped. It's larger in diameter than the OHC pulley that I have now. I want to keep the smaller pulley to get more water flow so I ordered a fan spacer from March Performance. Looked real nice and shiny too. I put it on and the fan wobbled even more than before. The top of the spacer is not flat almost 1/8" in less that 2". Not impressed. Took me a couple of hours to flatten it. My machine shop equipment consists of a drill press and a vise. If I'd bought one of those bench-top drill press/milling machines it would have paid for itself making all these parts instead of buying them and then having to 'fix' them before they could be used. Anyone need a 9786819?
Neill, I have a 9786819 pulley from a 68' if interested.
