It was not uncommon for US cars that were sold new in europe to have very many options. US cars were (and still are) quite expensive in europe, so they had to compete with luxury cars like Mercedes, and therefore were expected to be very well equipped. Air conditioning was still very "new" in europe, it was almost non-existant, so it is not that strange that this car did not came with A/C, in my opinion.
The 1969 Firebirds I have seen that were sold new in Sweden all have de-luxe interior, power seat, power windows, folding rear seat, rear defog, power steering, disc brakes, limited slip diff, AM/FM stereo, 400HO engine (or the 6-cylinder Sprint engine) and so on.
I'm curious about which european country it came from? I would guess Germany since it was an american solider who bought it and brought it back to the USA.
IIRC there was a Belgian GM assembly plant also...but VIN no`s should reflect that...and yes in 60s ,there were no AC cars in Europe...my dad brought a brand new US bought Chrysler 300 K ( I forget the year, a 61?, 62?)to Sweden , it had AC and as far as I understand it was one of the first cars in Sweden with AC
everywhere we parked people would point and tell us we had a 'leak'....response was , "no its the AC"....which lead to."a car with AC?"
and Volvo, for instance didnt believe in AC, when my dad brought the first Volvos here in 56, they werte hot...even as late as in 68, 69 Volvo installed locally York units at dealerships...Volvo still didnt believe then that AC was needed.....today basically all cars in Sweden gets AC , for those "5 days of summer"...lol
