Is there an o-ring or gasket of some kind on the speedo cable where it screws into the side of the transmission? Mine has no o-ring and no other gasket, so it leaks.....or is it simply a fact of the whole cable needing to be replaced?
Drew, I just put my new speedo cable on last night, I'll crawl under tonight, pull it back out, and take a look and see if there was a new rubber gasket in there. I didn't even look.
One thing you get if you replace the speedo cable it is more fudge room up under the dash. I couldn't stand how hard it was to get the speedo cable out from the rear of the speedometer with the dash in place
So the new cable I bought it about 5 inches longer, and should provide me with some much needed space to move things around.
I dont know how to post the picutre here but go to http://1968firebird.groupwhere.org/illustrated/illindex.html I dont know which trans you have, but I looked at several transmissions and they all have an O ring that seals the speedo gear. Dont know if this is the one your talking about?
Drew, there is definitely a simple rubber gasket/washer in there. I replaced mine last year due to seepage, its a little bitty bugger rubber seal that you could find at most any hardware store. Or, pay for through an auto parts place. As you know, the threaded connector has no real torque expectations, its just "tighten till satisfied". Clean off all the grime around that connection and a simple rubber washer will do it for you.
