Hi, I need help! I want to change my master cylinder but when I bought one it does not have the rod attached that goes through the firewall to the brake pedal. It does not look like a rod can attach to it and I am hesitant to try to pry the rod off my old one just yet. Can anyone set me straight here. Thanks Pete
you'll have to pry the cap off the rear of the old master. make sure you are using a master with the same depth hole for the pushrod as you had before.
i think there are insructions in the service manual at 1968firebird.org they menion that the cap will no longer fit tightly but the firewall will hold it in place. there might actually be a retainer clip for it rather than prying, i dont know.
Thanks for the help Scott, I bought another master cyl. today that has a hole about 2" deep. The other one I bought is about 1/2" deep. All the ones I looked at so far were 1/2" deep. The info you posted says the rod comes out so I will try to remove it tomorrow. Thanks again, Pete
Here's an update, I got the rod off the old master cyl. it was rusted on pretty good. After I bolted up the master cyl. I spent 1-1/2 hours trying to hook up the pin and clip under the dash (#$%#$@ @#&##*& CLIP). The brakes seem to work way better but no real test drive yet, I ran out of brake fluid. I will let you know when I'm finished how it works out. Thanks Pete
