Ok, here is what Im thinking about.

What I have:
68 bird, hardtop, 455 (400hp =/-) with a TCI th350 trans.

What I would like to have:

same as above but with a strong trans w/overdrive.

Its just a burnout / street rod kinda car, nothing to show. Just want it to be fun and not kill me on the highway with MPG.

Is it worth the reward to pursue an OD trans?

Depends on the rear gear.

And your budget. And how much you drive the car.
For me, I only get to drive it once or twice a month and it just doesn't make sense to blow $4K on an OD setup. I can buy alot of gas for that much dough. I tach 3300 at 70 mph. I can live with it. I have 3.23s and an M20. Maybe if I had 3.90s and I wanted to keep them I might think differently.

Is it really that expensive? I agree, that $$ buys a lot of gas!

I was thinking maybe 1k-2k max and a bit of labor.

No, it isn't.

There are solutions in the price range you mention, I have 3.90's and have been doing the same research.
