Hello all; I'm about to finish up my 68 Firebird. It's painted, got the new top, and is home in the garage. Unfortunately, the body shop failed to hook up some items at the end.
The gas gauge is showing about the 3 oclock position; from what I've learned, it's probably not hooked up. So, I got under the car. There is a ground wire from the fuel sender unit. Then there is a brownish-tan wire that comes from the fuel sender. The 68 service manual shows that this tan wire should connect to the fuel sender unit in a block with the license plate late (black wire). Here's my dilemma:
The tan wire is coming out from the "front" of the gas tank area, and was routed up into the trunk up near the passenger seat. It then just was sitting there. If you look at the trunk area near where the gas tank fill pipe runs, you can see the two connector block I think is mentioned in the service manual; one wire is black and runs off to the license plate. The other connector has nothing attached. I'm guessing that is where the fuel sender connects. And I'm guessing it's routed up the same hole that the license plate wire is coming up.
What I'd love is for someone to please look at their set-up. Tell me how the wire is routed from the fuel tank sender to the wiring harness. A pic would be wonderful as well
Thanks in advance! Supposed to be nice tomorrow, will get the car washed up and take some pics and post!
Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking! They had my wire routed wrong..but that's exactly what it should be! Guess I need to drop the tank a tad to snake the wire correctly and it should be corrected! My orange wire is routed correctly. BUT, that tan wire is stuck in a hole that's in the trunk up near the rear seat! I can see it needs to go up near the filler tube area. Thanks much!
I routed the fuel sender wiring to the correct side, up the hole by the filler neck, and plugged it in...TADA! Fuel gauge is working correctly! Thanks everyone! Now about that pesky power steering pump I pulled off and have to put back on....
My fuel gauge isn't working properly. Could be the ground, but where should I find it? I found a grounding wire screwed to the car's underbelly at the front passenger side corner of the tank. This is probably it. Should it be? There doesn't seem to be anyway to service it without dropping the tank. My TAN wire is properly routed.
I was thinking that if I'm doing the tank, it's good measure to replace the sender on the old girl. Agree?
