Then Leo made it all the way to the final round. But there he drew a big red eye. But hey, any time you can win 5 rounds of Stock at a big div race, you've had a good day. So, congrats to Leo for a good day of racing, in his 1st gen '68 Bird !
There's a lot of racing on the schedule this weekend. There's a National event, called the Summernationals, at Englishtown, NJ. There are at least 4 Pontiacs on the entry list, in Stock Elim. And 3 of these are 1st gens.
One belongs to Adam Strang. It's one the few 4-speed Birds still in competition. Another is Todd Hoven, with one of the old Truman Fields '68's, painted up with the old "Hard Times" paint scheme. And there's Randi Lyn Shipp, with her '67.
Also entered is Scott Underhill, with the E/SA record holder, which is a '71 455HO T37.
There's also a Pontiac powered GT Super Stock car entered. It could be one of the Hatari cars, usually driven by SS champ Peter Biondo. But for this race, Sam Biondo is listed as the driver. The car is listed as a 2000 model with a 428 Pontiac engine for power.
Qualifying has begun at the Summernationals. Adam Strang has the highest qualified Pontiac Stocker, in his '68 E/S Bird. I can only count 5 stick cars on the entire list of 87 cars. Don't know about the FS cars. It's tuff to be competitive in Stock today, with a stick car, because of the breakout feature of competition. It's just easier to cut consistently good lights, and run consistent ET's with an auto trans.
Hey ya'll like a good 1st gen story, don'cha ? Well I got one. They had Stock, class elims today at the Summernationals. Randi Lyn Shipp did not have the quickest car in her C/SA class. The quickest car easily had her covered. They met in the class final. As expected, he turned in a quicker time. BUT, I assume he was just a tad overconfident. He cut a real bad light, she cut a .007, and picked up the class win ! Great job Randi !!!
There'll be lots of Pontiacs in action to day. Besides the Summernationals, there is a div 2 race. There we have the two '73 Birds of Adam Davis and Michael Brand.
In div 3 we have at least 5 Pontiac Stockers--Tommy Pettigrew, Julie Biermann, Jack Larsen, Don Turk, and Todd Kuhn. There's quite an assortment of body styles. There's a '70 GTO, a 1st & 2nd Bird, a '74 Grand Am, and a '77 Lemans.
Well shucks, ya'll. Randi Lyn made it thru to round 4. But there she cut a bad light, which is not like her. So, all the Pontiacs are out, at the Summers.
There's a 1st and 2nd gen on the Stocker list at the div 5 race. The 1st gen is an E/SA '68 Bird, driven by Ronald Prince. The 2nd gen is a K/SA '76 driven by Kevin Love.
Well, neither car made it passed the 1st round. I'm not sure, but I think that K/SA '76 Bird may be the same car that Mike Morgan raced last year. He won his class and 4 rounds of elims, at the US Nationals, then sold the car.
Would ya'll like to see another quick 1st gen, with a lady driver. Well, here's a Fire Bird, driven by Kaylyn Milton. She runs bracket and Super Gas. This past weekend, she ran S/G at the div 5 race, cut a .010 light, and ran right on the 9.90 index in the 1st round. Lost a close double breakout race in round 2.
Hey, an '06 Chevy Cobalt is #1 qualifier in Super Stock, at the div 4 race in Tulsa. So, you may ask, why on earth would I post this on this forum ? The answer is, because it has a Pontiac 428 engine sitting behind that Chevy bow tie on the grill !
There is a '79 Bird on the list of 1st round S/ST winners, that was not on the entry list. So I don't know if he has Pontiac power or not.
Justin made it to round 3, where he lost a close one. But Victor cut a .001 light and won his 3rd round by less than an inch ! That's the closest race I've ever heard of.
Well, Victor Santos almost cut a perfect light in round 3.
And, he almost cut a perfect light in round 4, also. And again he was only .001 away. But, unfortunately, this time he was on the wrong side of almost perfect. He cut a -.001 to turn on the big red eye.
But he had a great weekend. He qualified #1 and made it down to the final 5 cars, in Super Stock, at a national event. Hey, that ain't a bad performance. So congrats to Victor, for making a good showing and being a great representative for Pontiac power !
This weekend there is a national event and 3 div races. The Thunder Valley Nationals is going on in Bristol, TN. There appear to be 3 Stockers and 1 Super Stocker which are Pontiac powered. There's Randi Lyn Shipp, with her '67 Bird. And there are the '73 Birds of Adam Davis and Michael Brand. Johnny Duncan has a GT/HA 400 powered '95 Bird. Good luck to all these Pontiac racers.
Michael Brand cut a .003 light and took the holeshot win in the G/SA class final.
Carroll Warling tops the Super Stock qualifying list with his record holding '74 Lemans. And Scott Burton is on the SS list with his new GT/GA '91 Bird. It has a '73 Pontiac 400 for power.
Randi Lyn made it to the semi-final round and Michael made it to the finals. But we'll have to wait til Monday to find out who wins. They got rained out.
Update: They decided to run the Stock final at Norwalk. So, Michael Brand remains undefeated for the weekend. This, along with his .003 light holeshot win for the G/SA class trophy, make Michael my Pontiac racer of the week.
Carroll Warling and Scott Burton didn't get very far at the div 5 race. But Roger Benne made it to the semi-final round in the Super Street class, with his '70 GTO.
There's a National Event in Norwalk this weekend. There are several Pontiacs on the entry list. I see at least 4 in Stock. They are Randi Lyn Shipp, Julie Biermann, Michael Brand, and Billy Foder.
I am not familiar with this last name. The car is listed as a '72 Firebird, with a 455. But it is entered in A/S. That might be a misprint. Don't think any Pontiac combo's today run A/S. And I don't know of anybody running a 4-speed 455 '72 Bird in NHRA Stock Elim. Just found this, from last year. The car was listed in E/SA. That sounds more like it.
In SS, Bill Rink is entered, with his little '74 GTO. There is also a SS/AM class '00 Grand Am listed as having a Pontiac 439 engine. The driver is Jim Clark. I am not familiar with the car or driver. So, is it Pontiac powered or not ? Don't know why they list the 4th gen Bird engines as Pontiac. Anyhow, if anyone has more info on this car, please post.
There are also 2 Super Gas Pontiac powered cars listed. One is listed as a '33 Ford, with a 468 Pontiac engine. The driver is Tim Gillespie. The other is a '68 Bird, with a 461 Pontiac engine. Doug Croft is the driver.
This week, they're gettin their kicks at Route 66. And the girls have their 1st gens runnin 10's, again ! Don Turk also has his '74 GA entered in Stock.
Randi Lyn got the C/SA class win, and Carroll Warling got the SS Auto Combo win.
Scott Burton made it all the way to the final round in Stock. But there, one of the 9 sec late model guys cut a great light and Scott had to settle for RU.
Todd Kuhn drove the only Pontiac to make it passed round 2. He made it to round 4. But with the huge field of Stockers at this race, that was not far enuff. Congrats to Todd for his 3 round wins.
Well, there were at least 3 first gens in action this past weekend. Todd Hoven made it to round 3, with his '68 D/SA, at the div 1 race. But all other Pontiac powered cars went out early, at the Sonoma Nationals and the div 1 race.
Well, I'm happy to report that Tommy, driving his 350 Pontiac powered 2nd gen, won Stock Eliminator at the div 3 race ! Congrats to Tommy for a great performance, with Pontiac power !
Todd Hoven has his 1st gen in action again this weekend. He's running D/SA this week, with his 330hp '68 Bird. He qualified with a 10.62. He won his first 2 rounds. In round 2, he cut a .023 light and ran right on his 10.65 dial-in.
There was also a div 5 race this weekend. There, Bill Rink qualified in the #1 position, at over a full second under his Super Stock index, with his little '74 GTO.
In Super Street, Jason Hennessey made it to round 5, where he lost a real close double breakout race. Congrats to Jason for running a dead on 10.900 in round 1, and making it to round 5. He did some good driving.
This week we got a National event and a div race. At the Lucas Oil Nationals, in Brainerd, there are a couple of 1st gens that are doin good. Randi Lyn Shipp got her C/SA class win yesterday, with her '67 Bird. And she also won her 1st round of elims today. She ran a 10.49 yesterday. That ain't bad for a 400 D-port Stocker, ya'll !
And, in Super Gas, there's another girl in a 1st gen. She is Kaylyn Milton. She won 2 rounds today. The 2nd win came with a .003 light. So, these gals are some serious Pontiac powered racers !
There are also 2 cars representing Pontiac in Super Stock. There's Bill Rink's little '74 GTO, and Greg Meyer's 3rd gen GT Bird. Both cars won their class yesterday, and their 1st round of elims today.
Well, Randi Lyn has the only Pontiac left in competition, today. But hey, it only takes one to win. She has been doing some great driving, and has made it all the way to the final round, with her 1st gen Bird ! You go girl !
She did it, ya'll !!! Randi Lyn won the Stock Wally, driving her Pontiac powered 1st gen Bird ! She had a nice weekend, picking up her class win and the eliminator win ! Congrats to her for a great performance !
There's a big div 3 race this weekend. There are lots of Pontiacs entered. Hey, you can even watch some live coverage. I just saw Michael Brand run an 11.10, and Scott Burton run a 10.31 in their Stockers.
I got great news. Another Pontiac powered Bird has picked up a major win, at the div 3 race, in Bowling Green ! It took some great driving and 7 round wins to do it, but Adam Davis won the Stock Eliminator class ! So, congrats to Adam, for a job well done !
Todd Hoven made it to round 4, with his '68 Bird. Check out the great lights he and Adam cut.
The link below is supposed to be from the Live coverage of Sunday's action. I've had mixed results with the site. But, it's cool to actually see these old Pontiacs flying down the track.
OK, at the US Nationals , In Stock and Super Stock, they run the 128 cars which run the farthest under their index, during qualifying. All the Pontiac powered Stockers but 1, made it into the show.
In Super Stock, all the Pontiac powered cars made the show. Bill Rink won the SS/LA class, with his little 350 powered '74 GTO. And Robert Cruzen won the GT/AA class with his little alum headed 428 Pontiac powered Chevy.
The first 2 rounds of Stock Elims were held today. 4 Pontiac powered Stockers made it thru both rounds. The drivers were Randi Lyn Shipp, Tommy Pettigrew, Scott Burton, and Adam Davis.
Well, Adam didn't make it much further. Peter Biondo made it to round 5 in Super Stock. But that's as far as he could go. So, all the Pontiacs are out, at the this year's US Nationals.
After being delayed by rain, they finally got in 1 round of Stock qualifying, at Englishtown. Besides Todd Hoven's '68, Adam Strang is also entered, with his 4-speed '68.
At the div 1 race, Todd Hoven won his first 2 rounds of elims. The 1st round was real close. Both drivers ran their dial-in. But Todd cut a .005, for the win !
There's a whole lotta racin goin on this weekend. There's a National event on the East coast, a div 6 race on the West coast, a div 4 race in the South, and the Northern Sportsnationals in the North. There are also lots of bracket racing events.
At the Carolina Nationals, all the Pontiacs were eliminated Sat.
At the Northern Sportsnationals, Julie Biermann, Michael Brand, and Bob Michael got their Stock class wins.
