My engine guy says my 1968 350 #17 heads need oversized (length) valves that he can't find, so I need to go with 6X heads. If he stays with the 17 heads, he'll need to add adjustable rockers. He seems to think it's better to go with the 6X. I think they are 6X-4. Does this sound right? Does anyone have any or know where I can get them? The aluminum's are $1200 EACH. Too much! Looking for cast. Thanks Dave 757-705-7395
The #17 heads can be used to build a nice 350 engine. But, they require a lot of work. They have press-in studs, small valves, and do not have hardened seats. So, the 6x heads are probably cheaper.
The 6x-4 heads can be found. But, they have around 93-94cc chambers which will give a 350 only about 7.6:1 compression. But, they do have 2.11 intake valves, screw-in studs, and hardened seats. So, you can shave some off these, and use thin Cometic head gaskets, to raise the SCR some, and use a Lunati Voodoo cam, such as the 256. This will increase both your static and dynamic compression. The combo will make a decent, low compression, pump gas street engine. IMO
