i have a question about my 67. I bought my firebird last year, it is a 400 4spd car but the motor is not the original 400. The block is from a 74 and the heads are #48's from 69. The guy that i bought it from said i would need to replace the motor mounts. I have been working on the body and suspension and now i am getting to the point of getting it back on the road. (gas tank has been out all winter and spring). Now my question, i was crawling around under it the other day and noticed the front of the oil pan was touching the frame on the front?? I looked at the motor mounts and can't see any visible damage. Would putting fresh mounts pick the motor back up? would 67 motor mounts work with this 74 block? i don't see any frame damage of any kind anywhere up front. Anyone have any ideas??
Probally, but I hate to send people on wild goose chases with hit or miss as a fix-it. Old style mounts accept old style and new style blocks, but new style mounts only accept new style blocks.
Some 74 blocks do not accept the old mounts. When the previous owner installed your engine he must have rigged it in some way to fit. That's the only explanation of why the oil pan would be hitting the frame. If you could get a picture of the mount we could tell you what's up. ****One other thing I just thought of is if your trans mount is too high it could possibly change the angle of your engine to make it low in front. I have a '68 with the original 400. My pan was less than 1/16 above the frame. The mounts looked OK but, I changed them. Engine is now about 3/8 to 1/2" above cross member. Can't help you with the '74 block though...
I have a '67 with new mounts and zero damage to anything. The oil pan is about 1/4" above the frame. You need to remember that Pontiac was given a car designed for a SBC and had to shoehorn the V8 into it. They had to make it close to the subframe or else the motor would hit the brake booster and wiper motor.
