There is no pin or coupler in the carrier on a Pontiac. To remove the axel shaft I should be able to remove the 4 bolts at the wheel and pull the axel out. Correct?
Didn't have any trouble getting them off my 69 GTO. I was driving down the highway and the drivers side started to slide out. I saw it out the drivers door mirror in time to stop before it came clear out.The bearing retainer and the bearing had come loose from the axle. They were still held in by the plate but the axle was separated. I've heard of a lot of C-clip axles departing but not BOP. That's why they put C-clip eliminators in, supposed to be safer than C-clip. I took the four bolts out and took the plate, bearing, retainer and axle to a scrap yard about a half mile from where I was broken down. Borrowed a piece of pipe and a BFH and bashed it back together. got me the 10-15 miles home OK. bought all new both sides the next day.
